Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., one of my favorite authors and personal hero, died last night at the age of 84. Vonnegut was our Mark Twain and Ambrose Bierce. He wrote science fiction that on a grander level, was actually about the truths of the human condition.

He was pretty much dead-on right about everything and I'm going to miss him terribly.

    And so he goes...

"I am incidentally, Honorary President of the American Humanist Association, having succeeded the late, great science fiction writer Isaac Asimov in that totally functionless capacity. We had a memorial service for Issac a few years back, and I spoke and said at one point, "Isaac is up in heaven now." It was the funniest thing I could have said to an audience of humanists. I rolled them in the aisles. It was several minutes before order could be restored. And if I should ever die, God forbid, I hope you will say, "Kurt is up in heaven now." That's my favorite joke."

i seem to remember that platypus hated vonnegut - called him kurt vomitgut. anthony burgess, the author of "a clockwork orange", also disliked vonnegut.

    so it goes.

there's a short story writer named george saunders who reminds me of vonnegut.

i saw kurt vonnegut give a lecture at texas christian university back in the reagan years. it was funny. but the friend i went with thought he was shallow. there's no pleasing some people.

rest in peace, kurt. anywhere's better than here.

It's funny that you remember that, droopy. My roommate and I were talking about him at dinner tonight, and my well known dislike of his writing came up.

    So it goes.

"If what Billy Pilgrim learned from the Tralfamadorians is true, that we will all live forever, no matter how dead we may sometimes seem to be, I am not overjoyed. Still--if I am going to spend eternity visiting this moment and that, I'm grateful that so many of those moments are nice."
