i found an old box under my couch the other day
that contained, among other things, 3 newspapers
(fort worth star-telegram) from the late 1930s.
they're a bit brittle for me to leaf through, but
this article was on the bottom right corner of the
    dec. 28, 1937 paper.

Dear Doctor: I'd Like to Wear Mood No. 1769543
    Today
    __

New York, Dec. 27 (AP)--Doctors eventually will be
able to control human emotions, and make you happy
or sad at will, Dr. Foster Kennedy predicted
    today.

But the eminent neurologist added, that won't be
as good as it sounds, because if everybody were
happy, life wouldn't be much fun.

A member of the Cornell Medical and Bellevue
Hospital faculties, he told the Association for
Research in Nervous and Mental Diseases that
doctors had "pretty well determined" the brain
center which controls our moods and some day would
be able to "pull the switch" on that center.

"Some day," he visualized, "the governments of the
earth will appoint a switching day...and all
mankind will come to be switched to Heaven."

But soon, he continued, "they will begin to strive
to return to the world they knew of before, a
world of toil and conflict, of happiness and
    unhappiness."

And when they regained that world, he added, the
"lords of the earth" would load all the doctors in
the world on to scows and take them out to sea and
    dump them overboard."

If everybody were happy, he said, "we would all
    become Babbits*. Progress would end."

*a reference to the 1922 Sinclair Lewis novel
    Babbit.

'It' Girl Going to Be Mama of Daughter, So Papa
    'It' Hopes
    __

    Albuquerque, N. M., Jan. 27 (AP)--It's going to be
a girl at the Rex (Clara Bow) Bells

With a broad smile, the husband of the erstwhile
"it" girl confided his hopes today.

    "I think it's a girl--at least I hope so," he
said. The Bells have a 3-year-old son.

Bell stopped off here en route to Magdelene, N.M.,
to purchase cattle for the Bell Ranch.

    Ok. It made me smile.

really? good thing i didn't transcribe the "il duce
says nothing can be done about japan" article.

you know who clara bow is, right? you seem like
someone who would. it was a boy.

By The Watcher on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 - 05:31 am:

Ah, the "It" girl. I most confess I had to refresh my memory.
I've actually seen very few of her pictures. And, she is a bit before my time. But, she was a huge star.

No joke, I was babysat by Rex Bell on the night of my grandmother's wake.

This was in Las Vegas in 1993. My aunt Beth was a good friend of his (2nd? 3rd? much-younger) wife, and dropped me, my brother, and two cousins off at their ranch so we didn't have to go to the wake.

I don't remember much about Rex except that he was a tall older man with white hair, very nice, and he had two Blue Heeler dogs who swam in the pool with us.

The dogs were also very nice, in case you were wondering.

By Spider on Thursday, May 8, 2014 - 09:51 pm:

BTW, this Rex was Clara Bow's son, not her husband magically preserved from death.

By Spider on Thursday, May 8, 2014 - 09:52 pm:

BTW again, in between those two posts, I put my hair up in pin curls. Clara would have given me a thumbs up.

interesting. the child in the article would've
been rex bell jr.'s younger brother.

my father turned 75 last wednesday. he still sends
me the odd republican email forward and, if he
feels chatty, asks about my shoulder or whatever
he can think of. i've never had anything you could
call a conversation with him, and we have gone for
as long as a decade without actually talking to
each other at all. but apparently he's feeling his
mortality and wants to connect in the only way he
    knows how.

long ago, the whole family came to terms with the
fact that my father can't connect with people
emotionally. with the exception, evidently, of his
one child from his second marriage. his name is
dan; i've met him a few times, but don't really
know him. last week, out of the blue, he called my
sister - who has at least a little more contact
with my father - to ask her for "insight" about
our father. i guess he doesn't feel he gets enough
love or approval or something from my father.

I'm sure you've noticed. I'm just rambling though Sorabjiland.

I feel very out of it. It's not that I have been up for nearly 24 hours. I slept that long yesterday.

I just feel down. Upset. Slightly weepy for no good reason.

I think I'm just nervous about my wife's upcoming surgery.

Think I'll just check out a few more websites and go to bed.

By Pepper on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 - 11:37 am:

Have you talked to the doctor or therapist about feeling down? Perhap a hobby would do fine. Wishing you and your wife well.

By The Watcher on Thursday, July 3, 2014 - 05:44 am:

I need to see the therapist. I missed last months session.

I plan on making another appointment soon.

By Pepper on Friday, July 4, 2014 - 01:25 am:

I know seeing therapist helps you alot, I did sought one for myself, but wasn't able to go for a hour and half drive to see a therapist, I don't trust the locals because few of the therapist are too "shady".

She tells me that she wants to see me each week for each sessions, going to cost me 110 dollars for each session.

Happy 4tb. I am at the car sow and the weather. Is kind of pleasant. I am using my iPhone tho.

By droopy on Saturday, July 5, 2014 - 12:42 am:

happy 4tb. i'm home alone. there was a fireworks
display off to the northwest, but i couldn't see
it from my front yard. the 'works didn't go up
high enough. i think it was because they some guy
in a ww2 fighter plane circling the display. the
plane would pass right over my apartment, rattle
    my glassware.

Hi droopy, I had a little trouble with my iphone, see the comment I made above, it is too little for my hand and autocorrect is kinda of strange, but I am using my laptop, and recently, I bought a new laptop and Windows 8.1 a different ballgame.

Yeah, I am alone yesterday, trying to get ahold of my daughter, she is with someone for the fourth of July.
