i get on a plane in 25 hours to head on home.

did i ever tell you about my thanksgiving day ritual?

first, i get up at the crack of dawn, ride my bike down to Diamond Head crater and hike up. while i used to do this fairly frequently, it was always a unique experience on thanksgiving day. there are no locals on the trail whatsoever. it is all tourists, and they're milling around in mobs, even at 6:30 a.m. most of them seem to be korean, though there are always plenty of japanese. few of them speak a word of english, but they chatter excitedly, and stumble around on the trail, the young japanese girls often in high heels, the young korean girls in bowling shoes or old 80's sneakers, and all the short, clumsy adults dressed in golf shirts and khaki shorts holding digital video recorders.

every single person is completely fired up to be there. they all give each other the shaka sign and say "Aloha!" to every person who passes going up and going down the trail the whole way.

i get to the top and watch the sun finish its rise - then climb over the barricade to the ridge trail and hike over to the second barracks about 100 yards from where the tourists pack themselves in for a view and photo opportunities, where i hoist myself up on the roof, lay down, and watch the ocean.

then i run back down, get on my bike, and head home.

i shower, turn on some music, and begin creating magic in the kitchen. turkey, cornbread or lentil stuffing, pan roasted brussel sprouts, homemade cranberry sauce, salad.

every year i try a different pumpkin pie recipe. this year it'll be pumpkin pecan pie with bourbon.

my dad and i and various orphaned friends have an early thanksgiving supper. afterward we head off to waimanalo beach and spend the rest of the day digesting in the late afternoon sun, boogie boarding and general ridiculous frolicking in the small surf.

home again home again jiggity jig.
