return adress: [torn]mp Bodarc[?] Junction Texas 2cent Washington placed upside down. Addressed to: Miss Christine Simon 306 West 11th St. Austin Texas Junction, Texas Jan 12, 1931 Dear Elmer Bundren, Doesn't that bring back memories? If you'd a been here x mas week you would have more memories. Something terrible happened, can't tell it in a letter. Don't know much news. I'll jot down what I do know. Charlie Bierschwall looks just as silly as ever. Henry came back and tried to renew his love but it didn't work. Boss Winkle was home. Clarence Winkle is going with Lilly Mae Doran now. Wayne Camp was here xmas. Saw Soldier the other day. Man Parker is going with Miss Hart Edith is married and won't tell us wether she has done it yet or not. Yes. Charlie may be silly, but he sure does know how to make liquor. Ar_er..How about it Sweet thing? I sure did think Charlie was sweet that night. He sure does know how to tell jokes too. Oh Lordie Lordie. What does Elmer know how to do...steal dimes. I suppose Christine--what does she know how to do--keep slim from kissing her. And Elsa...to run over cedar trees. Es thiss not so, Seņorita? We had a xmas program here. Some very funny things happened. Roy Winkle,Charlie B, and Slim Amerson were kinda full from of Charlie's liquor, and a whole bunch of us kids were on the platform listening to Bobbie Lovey playing He's A music nist- I don't know how to spell it, but thats what he is anyway. And all the audience were still seated. And Roy walked up to me and whispered--if I would care if he kissed me. I thought he was just acting silly, so I said of course not. And what do you think, he smacked me one right there. Now maybe you think I didn't feel funny. What does this remind you of? When the booze is in the bottle And the bottle's in the car And the nightly stars are sparkling Like an early morning star Then it is that Christine, Slim, Charlie and Elsa are happy. Then it is that they are gay. As we mix rasins meal and soda in a contemplative way. Just to sit hugged up and soak and sizzle. As the night is tiring some And we dream in idle fancy of the happy days to come. When the whole car is a barroom As it gently flows with rum Then through the night--the Stars light--seems many miles afar--when the booze is in the bottle and the bottle's in the car. Maybe you'll like this one. Charlie heard the merry jingle The rumble and the roar. As Christine, Slim and I dashed Through the pasture. And came creeping up to a cedar. I heard Slim whistle--and Christine call As I bumped into the thicket And into a cedar tree. On that 4 wheeled stolen car. Now heres to Long Slim Bundren May his name forever stand He'll be honored and respected By the Elsa's, Christine's and Charlie's thru all the land And when his days are over And the curtains round him fall. We'll slip him off to "Satan" on that 4 wheeled stolen car if you ever find time to read this let me know, and I'll write more. --as never before, Spark Plug |
it. i'm supposed to be setting this to music. i've a tune in my head, but i'm lazy about how i want to organize all the words. written in january 1931. the depression had just begun, prohibition had yet to end. i wonder how far back these events go. last year? the car they were in must've been a model a ford. i don't know about stolen, probably just borrowed without consent. the hook will definitely be "when the booze is in the bottle..." but i think the name of the song will be "spark plug." |
