went over at my mother's earlier this evening. she wants to get rid of some of my grandfather's old junk, and i was over there making sure she didn't throw out anything important. women are terrible creatures, sometimes; they think there's something good about throwing things out. my grandfather left behind a warehouse full of random junk, and i've always loved it. when people die, some of them want to leave behind poetry, inventions, industries, children - i come from people who just want to leave behind junk, and lots of it. i judge a man's worth by the amount of junk he leaves behind. only junk matters. while i'm there, she gives me a bottle of uncle newton's homemade peach brandy. i think she's had it sitting in a closet for close to a year. he told me how he makes it, once. go out to a peach orchard and pick 'em up off the ground. don't wash 'em, 'cause part of the fermentation process is the bacteria, gotta have bacteria. can't remember what he does next, but it all ends up in plastic bottles...like huge old 2 liter gatorade or grape juice bottles. then he keeps them stored in the garage for a month or a year to ferment. they get all dirty and dusty, the bottles. looks like a discarded bottle that's on the side of the road. more junk. mom was going to throw the bottle home, so i took it. went over to the oui lounge and had several scotches. now i'm back home and drinking the brandy. it's sweet and syrupy. like mad dog 20/20, which i haven't had since high school but that's how i remember it. while at my mother's, i told her my idea for the tree memorials down on our farm. we talked about what we wanted done with our bodies after we die - we are both firmly against being dumped in holes with a rock marking the spot. |

Patrick...since I have been searching the country for that old fashioned recipe for Peach Brandy...please ask your MOM if she knows how it is made. I'm from Louisiana and a person who worked for us made it each year for 60 years...Unfortunately, the recipe is not to be found, and I would adore having it. If you find out how to make it, please send it my way, and I shall be eternally grateful...Many thanks! Kendell6@aol.com |
