as you all know, i hate mayonnaise, and pretty much anything that contains mayonnaise.

but i love tuna fish. and i've gotten tired of tuna fish plain and tuna fish with vinegarette.

so what i've been doing is making my own, very mild hummus, and using that as a mayonnaise substitute.

it tastes really delicious, and adds actual nutritional value while subtracting the empty fat calories of mayonnaise.

i've been trying to think of other foods that could use hummus as a mayonnaise substitute.

my tuna fish salad recipe is:

    1 can of tuna
1 large rib of celery, finely chopped
    1 tbs dill relish
1/2 tbs spicy or grainy mustard
    2-3 tbs homemade hummus

    mix well.

my for-tuna hummus is different from my regular hummus. the for-tuna hummus is:

1 can garbanzo beans (only drain about 1/4 of the liquid out)
    1/4 cup tahini
    2 garlic cloves
1 tbs lemon juice (or juice of 1 lemon)
    dash of salt
    little splash of olive oil

put it all in a blender and spin it for about 90 seconds.

when i ran out of tahini and the store was closed, i used a spice grinder to grind up sesame seeds until it was almost a butter. it wasn't awful, but i won't do that again.

How come you don't like mayo Sarah? Taste? Texture? Both? I go through jars of Hellman's like it's water. Especially when I'm making potato salad during the summer. Potatoes, hard-boiled eggs, celery, red onions, pieces of bacon, and a shitload of mayo.

i was beaten with mayonnaise as a child.

no, i think i was scarred by mayonnaise in sushi. that's just not right.

every time i try to eat something w/ mayonnaise in it, it tastes like i'm eating something that's been sitting in a big bowl behind the prepared foods counter at a supermarket.

bacon, mayo, ground beef. what a great combo.

mayo has protein! good for you!

whenever i make some with with mayo, i always take the last spoonful to my mouth.

By patrick on Thursday, August 17, 2006 - 04:55 pm:

its hard not to do that with mayo. shit is so fuckign good man.

it has like 80grams of fat per spoon, but thats why its so damn good.

By Nate on Thursday, August 17, 2006 - 04:59 pm:

but it is good fat. healthy healthy fat.

By heather on Thursday, August 17, 2006 - 10:01 pm:

you can make your own mayo with eggs and olive oil, quite good for you.

i use hummus as a spread on lots of sandwiches and dip. it's good with carrot, cucumber, pepper, tons of stuff.

also so good, toasted pita, tahini, rooster sauce and lots of parsley [or tabbouli!]

By Antigone on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 12:34 am:

Yes, home made mayo is frikkin' cool. Add your own bits, like garlic, tahini, and tabasco.

In London, its 5.50 a.m.,as you all know v dont sleep much, but I did see the main heading,"nutritional extras",v is on zinc pills,as it will cure just about anything you can think of.Most westerners are in short supply of that metal.,you only get 25% of what you need...its real good for skin and hair, and just about any thing else.

By V on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 02:14 am:

sarah,v cant eat celery,I throw up,do you have a substitute?

By Antigone on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 04:20 am:

    Magnesium is good too, V.

By Dr Pepper on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 12:48 pm:

    V. What do you mean,"Most western are in short supply of that metal"? We do have plenty of zinc. try that at my work. we have in hundred of tons.

By sarah on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 02:44 pm:

no substitute for celery. just leave it out.

did anyone follow the link i posted and read the NY Times magazine article?

By wisper on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 09:15 pm:

it's weird to think that a virus can cause the body to store more body fat more easily.

but i guess if a virus can cause cervical cancer, it's not that hard to believe a virus could help promote obesity or weight gain.

By V on Thursday, August 24, 2006 - 12:52 am:

...look,celary is poison to v,I gave it a try and threw up,sorry.

By sarah on Thursday, August 24, 2006 - 02:28 pm:

so what you're saying is, celery makes you throw up?

By Czarina on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 09:52 am:

Viruses are the root of all evil.

They have made a scientific breakthrough concerning this.

They have discovered how to trigger the T cells to activate. This will be a major breakthrough in treating HIV, and also cancers.

They are concerned because at this point they are not able to regulate it, and fear that it might throw the body into overdrive, triggering auto-immune diseases.

    This is very exciting news.

I think v should eat more celery.

I have to go ex-foliate now.

By V on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 03:28 pm:

...Shaveing your pubes is not my concern...

By V on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 03:38 pm:

sarah, indeed, celery is anti v,I thow up,,,a bit like garlic to a vampire.

By V on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 03:49 pm:

...for some reason,v cant eat celary,it is the most disgusting food on Earth.
