radiohead says pop is dead, but when does dying start? did pop start dying when it was invented, or when people who liked it started losing intereset? i mean, pop grew and died like people, but pop isn't dead yet, so how do we know its dying? what if its just demanding less attention before its comeback? sleeping is an alternative, yaknow? it could have cycles, it comes, it goes, but isn't really gone, its there if we need it. When is music officially dead anyway?

By PhDRock on Wednesday, June 3, 1998 - 12:48 pm:
as soon as something is born, it begins to die....

sometimes it takes a bit longer, sometimes it takes no time at all....

sometimes it takes just the right amount of time

I always thought that "Pop is Dead" was Pop as in Father, Pa, Dad. But Pop Music does make more sense.

By I believe in a thing called love on Thursday, September 18, 2003 - 04:33 pm:

I think pop music is dead. After all, when you think about it, the only pop that's really out there now is manufactured, and that has a really short shelf life.R&B is now really big, and hip-hop, rock, and indie. But pop...it's sort of fizzled out!

By RUM on Thursday, September 18, 2003 - 04:36 pm:

Wow! what a wierd discussion! And how come there's one recent message...actually, it was about 3 minutes ago! Oh well, coz I agree with the fan of The Darkness, by the looks of it. Pop music is dead!

By Lapis on Thursday, September 18, 2003 - 05:03 pm:

Two words: indie pop. That's the music that seems to be the death or Portland.

By Hal on Friday, September 19, 2003 - 01:01 am:

Uh... Can't stand Indie Music, also known as Emo.

By Nate on Friday, September 19, 2003 - 02:36 am:

i am now taking bets on who will be the first sorabjiite to jump all over hal for that statement.

By Lapis on Friday, September 19, 2003 - 03:40 am:

Indie, short for independent or underground. Emo, stort for emotional.

Often confused, emo music can be indie, but not all indie music is emo. There's indie pop, indie noise, indie metal..... Likewise, there is mainstream emo, mostly in the so-called "alt-rock" genre.

Even indie day-glo goth, if you can belive it. If Jonny-X and the Groadies has a show when you visit I'm gonna make you go. It's definately not emo.

By Hal on Friday, September 19, 2003 - 11:12 am:

Well... Had I put money down on that before it happened, I would have been right.

By Lapis on Friday, September 19, 2003 - 12:06 pm:

    Bah.

I was just going to post that,I love it, every man looks at me as if I were a dickhead.

By patrick on Friday, September 19, 2003 - 02:35 pm:

    *predictable statement*

i was listening to emo and indie before you kids were old enoungh to wipe your own ass.

its funny that the terms are so official now. before it was obvious. saying jawbreaker was emo it was like "duh".

don't you realize, with all the silly ass labels you effectively kill it.

By Nate on Friday, September 19, 2003 - 02:42 pm:

(that's the response i was expecting. patty, so predictable)

By patrick on Friday, September 19, 2003 - 03:03 pm:

i know that, and i gave it to you.

By Nate on Friday, September 19, 2003 - 03:34 pm:

i realize that, but what would one predictable statement be without the other?

By wisper on Friday, September 19, 2003 - 07:03 pm:

i often wonder why patty has to point these things out.

behold! the hardcore-est of all hardcores!

By TBone on Saturday, September 20, 2003 - 12:10 am:

    Arr!
    (It's talk-like-a-pirate day, isn't it?)

By Lapis on Saturday, September 20, 2003 - 05:12 am:

Yes it is. And everyone else I know is denying its existence.

By patrick on Saturday, September 20, 2003 - 01:57 pm:

like i said wisper, i didnt have to, i just did because nate asked for it.

By TBone on Saturday, September 20, 2003 - 06:17 pm:

Just for the record, I got the joke.

By wisper on Saturday, September 20, 2003 - 07:33 pm:

    i meant in general.

    blah!
