By Sabine on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 - 11:42 pm:

I went to see Neal Young in concert in Chappel Hill, and he was great. The SONIC YOUTH came out before Neal Young and Crazy Horse, and they were so loud and just terrible.

By Christopher on Thursday, March 28, 2002 - 02:01 pm:

I first saw sonic youth around 1983, down in Greenwich Village. They were playing a club called The Mint, or whatever it's then incarnation was. By the third set, Thurston Moore was completely naked. There were no catchy tunes, only an awesome wall of sound. I remember stage diving at this show, because someone had brought one of those baby dolls with the cloth body and platic head. While I was being tossed around, someone set the dolls hair on fire, and tossed it into the mix. I rememember the stench of burning plastic, and sparks flying over my head. Fun times.

By eri on Thursday, March 28, 2002 - 06:02 pm:

I think that 1983 was probably the last time I had heard of Sonic Youth until now.

By Christopher on Thursday, March 28, 2002 - 06:33 pm:

How about Camper Van Beethoven? I saw them open for Sonic Youth at least 3 times that I can remember. They were a lot of fun, but they never got naked like Sonic Youth, or Butthole Surfers. Sonic Youth really aren't that bad. They fall into an odd niche..Post Punk/Pre-grunge. The stuff they did around 85-87/88 was actually pretty good. When I saw them at the clubs in the early 80's they were playing on high school garage band equipment. My friend John used to sell them echo-plexers and other gadgets right at the shows because they would blast their equipment to smithereens with all the god-awful feedback. On a side note, my friend John Morrow's claim to fame is that he was the chief sound engineer for Philip Michael Thomas's first album. For those too young to remember, he played Sonny Tubbs opposite Don Johnson on "Miami Vice", and is the father to Melanie griffiths first child. CHRIST, how do I remember this crap?

By Nate on Thursday, March 28, 2002 - 07:13 pm:

didn't don johnson marry melanie griffith?

By patrick on Thursday, March 28, 2002 - 07:17 pm:

Sonic youth, to me are significant in the American music scheme of things because they really solidified the concept of the "wall of noise" and the underlying beauty in said wall.

By Christopher on Thursday, March 28, 2002 - 07:30 pm:

Well, if you want to believe the media, Don Johnson is the father...BUT THOSE OF US WHO KNOW BETTER recognize the uncanny resemblance of Melanie's first born to PM Thomas. Trust me on this. I wouldn't steer you wrong. Melanie is being forced to lie about it by that unspeakable latin that she is currently hitched up with. Yes, She was married to Mr Johnson, but we all know it was one of those show-biz arranged scientology marriages, like Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. The 80's made people do weird things. I KNOW! I WAS THERE!

By spunky on Thursday, March 28, 2002 - 07:31 pm:

    oh, thats whats wrong

By Nate on Thursday, March 28, 2002 - 07:58 pm:

    damn you tubbs.

miami vice tubbs != league of gentlemen tubbs

By Sabine on Thursday, March 28, 2002 - 07:59 pm:

Okay so Sonic Youth is more liked than Neil Young, I assume. I just answered the question truthfully and from my heart. I do have a right to MY opinion, right?

Neil Young rocks!but so did Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Pearl Jam, Joe Cocker, and Grand Funk. Okie dokie. Forget spell checking or anything like that, because I really don't pay that any attention.

    KISSES

By Christopher on Thursday, March 28, 2002 - 08:00 pm:

Now, now, spunky, its wrong to crucify an entire era because of its misled beliefs on child rearing, marriage and religion. The 80's were what made it possible for you kiddies to walk around with your pants down around your knees. If the 80's were like the 70's, people would be beating the crap out of you while whistling Charlie Daniels tunes. The 80's expanded the waistband of pop-culture while keeping it fit on a steady diet of cocaine and diet cola. Like Jimmy Carter, it will one day be recognized as the high water mark of culture. C'mon, join me..."girls just want to have fu-un"...

By eri on Thursday, March 28, 2002 - 09:16 pm:

Spunky wasn't trying to bash the 80's. He couldn't get away with that married to me :p
He was trying to bash scientology, and he hates Melanie Griffith.

By Christopher on Thursday, March 28, 2002 - 10:14 pm:

It's not Melanie's fault that she is perceived the way that she is...It's that megalomaniacal ogre Antonio Banderas. Imagine being married to Ricky Ricardo, but he's not funny, and he'll smack you around if you try to be in the show. that poor woman. I feel so deeply for her. First, that Sci-Fi church forces her to marry Don Johnson, while she's carrying the love child of PM Thomas. Then, everyone keeps getting her confused with Meg Ryan, despite the disparate nature of their perky qualities, only to rush headlong into the arms of that monster, Banderas. Now her innate sense of good taste is being forcibly overriden, and She is compelled to deck out her home in ghastly velvet flocked wallpaper, and conquistador wrought iron lamps. Somehow, the ghastly reach of Elron Hubbard continues to claw at her from beyond the grave, forcing Her from one bad marriage to the next, while deep in her heart, it is the love that dares not speak its name that she dreams about nightly, and who's name she utters in her dreams: "Tubbs...Tubbs...Tubbs..."
Oh God. Where are my pills.

By eri on Thursday, March 28, 2002 - 11:18 pm:

"It's not Melanie's fault that she is perceived the way that she is...It's that megalomaniacal ogre Antonio Banderas."

I understand what you are saying here, but we didn't like her before Antonio Banderas (which by the way I am NO fan of).

Her cocaine addiction goes back much farther than L.Ron Hubbard.

Although she probably leads a sad and lonely life, and we don't know her personally, there is no love there.

We have never put her in any comparison with Meg Ryan. They are two different people.

In the public eye there are people you like to watch and people you don't. She has never held any interest to us, much like Julia Roberts. If you asked my why it was I didn't like either one of them, I could only answer boredom or something superficial (like I think Julia Roberts has a big unattractive mouth). It isn't anything personal, per say, because we don't know them personally.

I have always thought that Antonio Banderas was an ass. Pretty full of himself. Don't doubt what you say about their marriage. The thing is that I don't know her well enough to say if she has a way to take charge of her life or not. I don't buy the happy family shit that gets put on the covers of crappy magazines at the grocery check out.

I guess I just don't figure it is any of my business and why bother. I am just not a fan. She may be a product of something and it may not be her fault, but it isn't any of my business.

If I met her at a party, I don't think we would click or get along. I don't think I have anything in common with her. I don't care to know her.

This is nothing personal against anybody, but some people you immediately like and some you don't.

By heather on Thursday, March 28, 2002 - 11:26 pm:

and you can tell just by watching them on tv

By Barry Convex President Spectacular Optical on Thursday, March 28, 2002 - 11:39 pm:

You know, they put signals under the television shows that induce a special sort of tumor that makes you succeptible to suggestion. It makes you buy things that you don't need. Even worse, under pornographic tapes, they are using this same technology, but for even more nefarious reasons. Those individuals who watch porno, grow a tumor that that makes them even more malleable; they are sent instruction signals through the tape that turns them into political assasins. Shortly after this, they succumb to the tumor, or are wiped out in a hail of bullets while delivering the coup-de-gras to the aforementioned political target. Of course, this is all being done to strengthen the fiber of Western Culture; after all, do we really need the kind of scum that watch porno anyway?

By patrick on Friday, March 29, 2002 - 12:15 pm:

you guys should be ashamed for knowing all this useless information about bad actors.

By J on Friday, March 29, 2002 - 12:56 pm:

I've heard the goverment has the technology to spy on us through our t.v. sets, for real.

By dave. on Friday, March 29, 2002 - 01:01 pm:

i want that job. wait, no i don't. not unless i can also kill through the tv set.

By droopy on Friday, March 29, 2002 - 01:21 pm:

i'd like that job. i'd like to have a revolving schedule where i get to spend x amount of time watching people who watch porn channels, then sci-fi channels, then sports, then news, then sports, maybe some others, then see how many people intersect. like maybe there's a guy who wanks to porn and then screams at the news. then a woman who wanks to ted koppel and screams at porn. i bet it'd be hours of fun.

By semillama on Friday, March 29, 2002 - 11:33 pm:

What the hell doesany of this have to do with
    Sonic YOuth?

By J on Saturday, March 30, 2002 - 04:39 pm:

The goverment is spying on them.

By Thurston Moore on Saturday, March 30, 2002 - 11:08 pm:
