******* This Friday, August 22, you may experience higher traffic volume in the area due to the American Idol auditions. The auditions will be held at the Roundhouse Theater between 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, however contestants are allowed to line up at 5:00 AM. Building management will monitor the garage usage and assure that our employees will have ample parking spaces. ******* Oh, yay. The Roundhouse Theatre is right across the street from my office building. If only my office had a window! |

. This is precisely why I've started keeping a camera with me at all times. The world is full of delightful weirdness. . That, and I get my film developed for $1.50 a roll. . Ooh. Speaking of which, I just heard an ad for the Hempfest coming up. That thing's a goldmine of weirdness. . How's it going, Spider? |
Hempfest is fun to go to just because of the weirdness, nothing is as fun as watching the hippies eat the brownies and turn into dumbasses. Sit back, have a beer and watch them play with their hippie dogs. |
I'm doing okay, TBone, thanks for asking. How are you? |
|
|
. Only one more night of sleeping on the floor. I move into my new apartment tomorrow. |
How can that happen? Is that negative only? |
go to your local prof camera shop and ask if they have any out-of-date color film on sale. most have a box in back. you can get $8 slide film for a buck or two. Being out of date may or may not have any effect on the outcome, but to be sure, go ahead and cross process it. you'll love the results. though thats expensive processing because you have to take it to an actual lab. it runs me about $25 per roll, and thats medium format, meaning, there are 16 images as opposed to 24 or 36 per roll. so any money you saved on film, you're fucked in processing but the results are almost always fun. of course you can always shoot slide film as is, and then all you have to do is process it, which is cheap. |
. Yeah, that's negatives only. I scan my negs. . Great idea on out-of-date film. I'll have to inquire. |
I tried to send out slide film to be cross-processed for a friend of mine, but they went ahead and made slides instead, offering to make prints for $1.35 each. Grrr. Then again, I work at a big corporate grocery store that sends out film to a big corporate lab where they don't even pay attention to what they're printing. Every other place can be so expensive. I used a roll of kodak 400 that I found in Grandpa's bag, who knows how old. All the pictures turned out dark and blue, even though some were taken on the docks of Astoria at midday, not a cloud in the sky. We mark our out-of-date film occasionally, maybe 25% off. Mostly we just try to rotate every so often so we don't have any. |
c-41 at my lab costs $7 and about a buck per print, but the paper and printing quality is so much better than the machines you use lappy. plus i have options for borders. i can bleed it, white, black, or sloppy black borders. and only cross process slide to negatives. cross processing color negative to make slides doesnt work as well. since prof photo stores would be run out of town for selling out of date film, and since decent color film needs to be cold stored because it is dated, its a guarantee they will have some out of date on hand. you can some really kick ass professional grade film for fucking cheap. i wish had some of my cross processed film scanned. im currently working on a semi-long term project for angry sam. visual for his next flic. im using my Holga, out of date film, tungsten balanced in daylight and then cross processing it. if you're going to break some rules, you might as well break a lot of them. i'll scan some of the work sometime soon. they're pretty fucking cool. |
I've considered getting one several times, but I've been scared off by the processing costs. I should at least give it a shot. The lomography folks sell expired medium-format in their store. . I took a couple rolls to a Wal-Mart and a Target, and they scratched my negatives all to hell. They also covered them in greasy fingerprints. Made my day, I'll tell ya. . Can I expect to see a difference if I take my c-41 to a professional lab rather than the 1-hour I'm doing now? I would certainly expect prints to be better, but is there a difference in the developing as well? . Everywhere I've checked, including the nice labs, it seems the going price is $3 for c-41 developing. Except Target. I guess scratches and fingerprints cost 15 cents more. However, the good Missoula labs may not be equivalent to an LA Pro lab. My $1.50 developing comes from a little joint near where I work. They give me a student discount and treat my film with respect. Plus they're alright people. Couldn't ask for much more at that price. . Damn, but I'm chatty today. |
. An old friend from high school (we were in a band together and stuff) has worked at a number of photo places over the years. He currently works at the Wal-Mart photo box. Have any of you seen One Hour Photo? He doesn't look much like Robin Williams, but he's kinda balding on top and has always been really super conscientious about not messing up pictures and all. Just reminds me of the character in One Hour Photo. . Except I don't know of any stalker habits. |
it costs more to process but you wont have pimple-faced retards eating taco bell while the sleeve your negs. for the price, you have to stop and think about you're shooting a bit more, which is a good thing. i doubt you'd see a difference in developing. developing is what it is. there's no variant unless you specify...such as advising them to push or pull it. BUT, professional labs usually offer a discounted print price if you have them make prints *at the time of developing*. If you just have them do the negs, then come back later to have prints made, they'll charge you more. I just did a quick search at Kodak.com. These two labs are authorized by Kodak: MONTANA PHOTO SERVICE 1209 S HIGGINS AVE MISSOULA, MT 59801-4140, USA Phone: 406-542-0012 PHOTOGRAPHICS 204 E SPRUCE MISSOULA, MT 59802, USA Phone: 406-721-0559 There's no reason why they can't do just as good of work as I get here in Hollywood. This is the lab i use http://www.imagexperts.com/ check out the sample prints under 'type C color machine prints" http://www.imagexperts.com/color2.html#colorprocess the prints really look that good and you have all the options for borders. |
Most cheap shops don't hire people who actually know anything about film, but if you're good at it they notice. Film that gets scratches in it happens because of the developing equipment. If the person who shuts down the machine for the night gets water anywhere on the inside of the developing machine other than the rollers, it molds. The mold scrapes at the film as it goes through and is hell to chip off. I've tried. Fresh developed film is always run through a brush as it goes through for pictures, reprints are wiped. When I was on jury duty I checked out wolf camera a couple of times, they don't seem too bad. I got a new neckstrap for Grandpa. The trial was vs. Taco Bell, by the way. |
. Thanks for the info, patrick. You kick ass. |
because of the popularity of holga's they've started tricking them out. they now sell holga's with glass lenses. but thats sorta against the holga philosophy as far as im concerned. they also have holga that are modified to take a polaroid film back to them, so you can shoot polaroid. again...sorta wack....its like those silly kids who trick out hyundai's talk to me if you get one a holga. i have couple tips for you. they're only like $13. |
|
I got a good parking space, even though I saw absolutely no sign of anyone "monitor[ing] the garage usage and assur[ing] that our employees will have ample parking spaces." I'm afraid of the traffic in the evening, though. I think I might hang around town and then see "Dirty Pretty Things" at the art house theatre, and thereby wait until activity has died down before attempting to leave the garage. |

VOLUME 31 ISSUE 18 — 13 MAY 1997 Study: Uneducated Outbreeding Intelligentsia 2-To-1 CHICAGO—In a report with dire implications for the intellectual future of America, a University of Chicago study revealed Monday that the nation's uneducated are breeding twice as soon and twice as often as those with university diplomas. "The average member of the American underclass spawns at age 15, compared to age 30 for the average college-educated professional," study leader Kenneth Stalls said. "America's intellectual elite, as a result, is badly losing the genetic marathon, with two generations of dullards born for every one generation of cultured literates." Added Stalls: "At this rate, by the year 2100 there will be five smart people on Earth, swallowed whole by more than 12 billion mouth-breathers incapable of understanding the binary exponentiation that swamped the Earth with their like." High-school dropout Mandi Drucker, 16, said of the findings, "All I know is, we're in love." |
wrong for me to say that? yes it's not true though, silly spunky, except for the part where it's always been that way besides, university diplomas are vastly over-rated [thank god, heh] |
yesterday i made eyes with an elephant on a smoke break. she was there for the Animal House Aniv. parade that is for some damn reason getting press. ive seen some of the craziest god damn things go on in front of my office, on a near weekly basis. elephants have beautiful eyelashes. i felt really sad for this big girl. she seemed so bored. whenever anyone would come up to the area where she was at, and smile at her, she would take her trunk and touch them sweetly, playfully, and her handlers would advise her to back off. they say elephants, like dolphins and whales are highly intelligent creatures....and you could tell, by her affection, and her response to people. i was secretly hoping she'd just up and stomp down hollywood blvd. |
I searched for news articles about the auditions, and found these rules posted: ********* If you think that is tough, only the first 99 eligible contestants will be registered and guaranteed a 60-second audition. Up to 100 additional people will be registered, but not guaranteed a chance to sing. ********* |

It's like you become embarassed for them because most of the time they have no idea how stupid they look. Welcome to the Dollhouse gives me gayface when Dawn asks Steve to be in her club for special people or when she's dancing on the car while he sings. When the scenes are over, I can feel kind of sorry for her, but while the scene is happening...that oh-my-god-you-did-not-just-that cringe...that's gayface. |

New Zealand Idol audtions were held here last week. I'm not sure when its coming to tv, and i am frightened. |
You hear one person butcher a Mariah Carry song, you've heard them all. I like seeing their funny "LOOK AT ME- IM AN INDIVIDUAL!!!" clothes, though. I think my Idol tolerance is getting dangerous low. |
i liked the army chick. she seemed fun. |
I liked the redheaded stepchild. Scooter girl gave me gay face, I'm pretty sure. I haven't seen anything interesting enough to comment on yet, other than that. |
