One of the most disturbing songs I have ever heard is coursing through my brain at the moment: Nick Drake's "Black-eyed Dog."

It has a very simple (major-keyed) melody and very simple verses:

A black-eyed dog, he called at my door
A black-eyed dog, he called for more
The black-eyed dog, he knew my name
The black-eyed dog, he knew my name

I'm growing old and I want to go home
I'm growing old and I don't want to know
I'm growing old and I want to go home

The black-eyed dog, he called at my door
The black-eyed dog, he called for more

It's sung in this very strange, high-pitched voice that is quite unlike Drake's usual smooth baritone. It's got to be one of the most depressed and depressing songs out there.

and i'm soooooo lucky it's stuck in my head >:(

I have never heard this song, but I am depressed as well for having read the lyrics. Today is my birthday. I'm growing old and I want to go home.

Question: Should I fear this black-eyed dog?

Apparently not, looks like he lost his last fight!

By Bad Billygoat on Tuesday, November 24, 1998 - 04:40 pm:

P.S. Does the black eyed dog like "tender vittles"?

By Me............. on Tuesday, November 24, 1998 - 04:47 pm:

Listen, you! This means all of you!
(God, I sound like my mother)

Stay focused! Nick Drake: one of the all-time greatest folk musicians! "Black-eyed Dog": the song chronicalling his depression!

    Have you no respect?

By O on Wednesday, November 25, 1998 - 11:55 am:

I meant "chronicling". Or did I? How do you spell that word, anyway?

By Me............ on Wednesday, November 25, 1998 - 12:14 pm:

    Maybe crony-crawling ??

another great Black Dog song is The Black Dog by Jesse Winchester. Anyone else know him?

in this song, the black dog comes home with "blood upon his face" and no one knows where he has been.

By Agatha on Friday, November 27, 1998 - 05:51 am:

i have a black dog. his name is truck.

By Joanne on Friday, November 27, 1998 - 11:26 am:

i read black dogs by ian mcewan. i'd recommend it, since i know none of these songs of dogs

By Simon on Friday, April 2, 2004 - 11:19 am:

It's easy to forget that he's singing about a black-eyed dog, not a black dog. It could be a golden retriever for all we know.
