By
Margret on Tuesday, February 15, 2000 - 12:43 pm:

Last week it was Blinded by the Light, then Jungleland. This week it's Thunder Road.
I think I have finally reached the age where liking Springsteen doesn't make me recoil in horror from myself and remain silent lest I reveal this most public shame.
    You know.
    Nebraska was always ok.
And I think I posted about the dream I had where Elvis Costello and Springsteen sang to me at some big banquet in my honour held by my advisor at Hopkins. And, you know, in case Scotty Wainio ever shows up: you were right, Scotty, and I am sorry.
    THUNDER ROAD

    The screen door slams
    Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch
    As the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
    Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
    Don't run back inside
darling you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty, but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me

You can hide `neath your covers
    And study your pain
    Make crosses from your lovers
    Throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
    Well now I'm no hero
    That's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl
    Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now
    Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow back your hair
    Well the night's busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
    Climb in back
Heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh oh come take my hand
Riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh Thunder Road, oh Thunder Road
    oh Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey I know it's late we can make it if we run
Oh Thunder Road, sit tight take hold
    Thunder Road

    Well I got this guitar
And I learned how to make it talk
    And my car's out back
If you're ready to take that long walk
    >From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride it ain't free
    And I know you're lonely
For words that I ain't spoken
    But tonight we'll be free
    All the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets

They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they're gone
On the wind, so Mary climb in
It's a town full of losers
And I'm pulling out of here to win.

    Ruh-Roh, Raggy, ReeRelRoh.

    Evil Woman
    (Jeff Lynne)

You made a fool of me, but them broken dreams have got to end.

Hey woman, you got the blues, cos' you ain't got no one else to use.
There's an open road that leads nowhere, so just make some miles
    between here and there.
There's a hole in my head where the rain comes in,
You took my body and played to win,
Ha Ha woman it's a crying shame,
But you ain't got no one else to blame.

    CHORUS
E-evil Woman, E-evil Woman, E-evil Woman, Evil Woman

    Rolled in from another town,
Hit some gold too hot to settle down,
But a fool and his money soon go separate ways,
And you found a fool lyin' in a daze,
Ha Ha woman what you gonna do,
You destroyed all the virtues that the Lord gave you,
It's so good that you're feeling pain,
But you better get yourself on board the very next train.

    CHORUS:REPEAT

Evil woman how you done me wrong,
But now you're tryin' to wail a different song,
Ha Ha funny how you broke me up, you made the wine now you
    drink the cup,
I came runnin' every time you cried,
Thought I saw love smilin' in your eyes,
Ha Ha very nice to know, that you ain't got no place left to go.

    CHORUS:REPEAT

By Margret on Tuesday, February 15, 2000 - 02:36 pm:

    Dude: I love that song.

And, btw, my name is Tommy and I became aware this year.

By Nate on Tuesday, February 15, 2000 - 03:29 pm:

ain't nothing wrong with the boss.

By Patrick on Tuesday, February 15, 2000 - 03:41 pm:

    what crap?

By Nate on Tuesday, February 15, 2000 - 03:52 pm:

By Margret on Tuesday, February 15, 2000 - 03:53 pm:

    Because Patrick requested it:

    Looks Like We Made It

-Artist: Barry Manilow as sung on "Greatest Hits" -Arista A2L 8601
-peak Billboard position # 1 for 1 week in 1977
-Words and Music by Richard Kerr and Will Jennings

There are you, lookin' just the same as you did last time I touched you
And here I am, close to gettin' tangled up inside the thought of you
Do you love him as much as I love her?
And will that love be strong when old feelings start to stir?

    Looks like we made it
Left each other on the way to another love
    Looks like we made it
Or I thought so till today
    Until you were there everywhere
And all I could taste was love the way we made it

Love's so strange, playin' hide'n'seek with hearts and always hurtin'
We're the fools standin' close enough to touch those burnin' memories
And if I hold you for the sake of all those times love made us lose our minds
Could I ever let you go?

    Whoa, no, we made it
Left each other on the way to another love
    Looks like we made it
Or I thought so till today
    Until you were there everywhere
And all I could taste was love the way we made it

    Oh, we made it

    Looks like we made it
Left each other on the way to another love
    Looks like we made it
Or I thought so till today
    Until you were there everywhere
And all I could taste was love the way we made it

    Looks like we made it

    FADE
    Both think we made it

    Suffer my wrath!

    Cherish
written by Madonna and Patrick Leonard
    Track 6, Time: 5:03
    -------------------------
So tired of broken hearts and losing at this game
    Before I start this dance
I take a chance in telling you
I want more than just romance
You are my destiny, I can't let go baby can't you see
Cupid please take your aim at me

    Chorus:

    Cherish the thought
Of always having you here by my side (oh baby I)
    Cherish the joy
You keep bringing it into my life (I'm always singing it)
    Cherish your strength
You got the power to make me feel good (and baby I)
    Perish the thought
Of ever leaving, I never would

I was never satisfied with casual encounters
I can't hide my need for two hearts that bleed with burning love
That's the way it's got to be
Romeo and Juliet, they never felt this way I bet
So don't underestimate my point of view

    (chorus)

Who? You! Can't get away I won't let you
Who? You! I could never forget to
Cherish is the word I use to remind me of your love

Romeo and Juliet, they never felt this way I bet
So don't underestimate my point of view

Who? You! Can't get away I won't let you
Who? You! I could never forget to
Cherish is the word I use to remind me of your love

    (chorus)

Give me faith give me joy, my boy
    I will always cherish you

    Driver's Seat
    Sniff'n'the Tears
Words & Musique : Paul Roberts

    Doing alright
A little jiving on a Saturday night
    And come what may
    Gonna dance the day away

    Jenny was sweet
Show a smile for the people she needs
    I'm trouble, let's drive,
I don't know the way you came alive

News is blue (the news is blue)
Has its own way to get to you
What can I do (what can I do)
When I remember my time with you

    Pick up your feet
Got to move to the trick of the beat
    There is no lead
Just take your place in the driver's seat

Driver's seat, oohoo, driver's seat, yeah

    Doing alright
A little jiving on a Saturday night
    And come what may
    Gonna dance the day away

Driver's seat, oohoo, driver's seat, yeah

    Jenny was sweet
    There is no lead
Pick up your feet, pick up, pick up
Pick up your feet, gonna dance the day away

Driver's seat, oohoo, driver's seat, yeah
Driver's seat, oohoo, driver's seat, yeah
    Driver's seat...

By Patrick on Tuesday, February 15, 2000 - 05:20 pm:

of course not nate, that was an expression of dismay at your opinion. i said nothing of validity in the grand scheme of things.

By Patrick on Tuesday, February 15, 2000 - 05:24 pm:

i wouldn't have asked what was crap if i had intentions of debating validity. How futile that is.

By Nate on Tuesday, February 15, 2000 - 05:36 pm:

    futile shmootile.

    don't bad mouth the boss.

By Patrick on Tuesday, February 15, 2000 - 05:46 pm:

    pffffft........

the boss can bite me. the over-rated, scruffy, no talent, new jersey turnpike crackpot.

By Spider on Tuesday, February 15, 2000 - 06:05 pm:

You have something against the Big Road?

By Dougie on Tuesday, February 15, 2000 - 08:15 pm:

I never really thought one way or the other about Springsteen. If he comes on the radio, I don't switch it, but I don't go out buy his stuff either. Although I love the song I'm on Fire, probably because I can imitate him singing it perfectly.

By Gee on Wednesday, February 16, 2000 - 01:32 am:

Bruce is alright. Every now and then he comes up with a song I really like, but for the most part I can leave him.

If I were a slightly more evil person I would corrupt this thread with canadian music and that would show you all!!

By agatha on Wednesday, February 16, 2000 - 01:56 am:

he wrote "because the night" for patty smith. i love that song. he always seemed like such a nice guy.

By Markus on Wednesday, February 16, 2000 - 03:21 am:

"the boss can bite me. the over-rated, scruffy, no talent, new jersey turnpike crackpot."

I love it when people save me the trouble of having to actually type.

    What he said.

By Margret on Wednesday, February 16, 2000 - 09:24 am:

    Augh! Augh!
We're not gonna take it, never did and never will.

By Margret on Wednesday, February 16, 2000 - 09:30 am:

OK, then, I would like to nominate Genesis' "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" as the rock opera (in potentia or did it ever get performed?) I'm most obsessed with right now.
Blame Cameron, he made me watch Tommy, which I'd never seen. When I saw it, I realized I'd seen much better attempts at the same thing, and heard much better music (I love Pete Townshend, I really do, but Tommy's a bit stretched), Pink Floyd's the Wall being the better all over effort, and Genesis' Lamb being the musically superior effort.
    Anyway.
    Rock on.

By Margret on Wednesday, February 16, 2000 - 09:35 am:

Oh, and, just imagine Springsteen and Costello on this one:

    JUNGLELAND

The rangers had a homecoming in Harlem late last night
And the Magic Rat drove his sleek machine over the Jersey state line
Barefoot girl sitting on the hood of a Dodge
Drinking warm beer in the soft summer rain
The Rat pulls into town rolls up his pants
Together they take a stab at romance and disappear down Flamingo Lane

Well the Maximum Lawman run down Flamingo chasing the Rat and the barefoot
    girl
And the kids round here look just like shadows always quiet, holding hands
From the churches to the jails tonight all is silence in the world
As we take our stand down in Jungleland

The midnight gang's assembled and picked a rendezvous for the night
They'll meet `neath that giant Exxon sign that brings this fair city light
Man there's an opera out on the Turnpike
There's a ballet being fought out in the alley
Until the local cops, Cherry Tops, rips this holy night
The street's alive as secret debts are paid
    Contacts made, they vanished unseen
Kids flash guitars just like switch-blades hustling for the record machine
The hungry and the hunted explode into rock'n'roll bands
That face off against each other out in the street down in Jungleland

In the parking lot the visionaries dress in the latest rage
Inside the backstreet girls are dancing to the records that the D.J. plays
Lonely-hearted lovers struggle in dark corners
Desperate as the night moves on, just a look and a whisper, and they're gone

Beneath the city two hearts beat
Soul engines running through a night so tender in a bedroom locked
In whispers of soft refusal and then surrender in the tunnels uptown
The Rat's own dream guns him down as shots echo down them hallways in the
    night
No one watches when the ambulance pulls away
Or as the girl shuts out the bedroom light

Outside the street's on fire in a real death waltz
Between flesh and what's fantasy and the poets down here
Don't write nothing at all, they just stand back and let it all be
And in the quick of the night they reach for their moment
And try to make an honest stand but they wind up wounded, not even dead
    Tonight in Jungleland
