Heard a rapped-up version of Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown" on the radio today by a group called "Elwood." Very funny. Made me think about how much I like Gordon Lightfoot once in a while, in very measured doses. To all you Canadians out there, is he like a huge icon in Canada? Is he like the Canadian Frank Sinatra or something? Or has his star faded? Just curious.

    you poor thing.

he is to us what he is to you. In fact, since you know who he is you're already one up on half of us.

Well don't that beat all. Damn, I thought there were probably statues of him in every Canadian city, that school children studied his lyrics like French kids do Brel, and that they'd trot him out to sing O Canada before hockey games, eh?

I think his influence is pretty much confined to the shores of Lake Superior, for "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald".

Which really should be covered by some over the top cheese ball metal band, like Metallica. It's right up their alley. If they can cover Bob seger, they can do Lightfoot.

I always thought Bruce Springsteen could do a decent job with that song, but the subject matter's probably a little dated for him, and Superior's not close enough to Jersey for him.

that's the only song of his I know. they kept playing it during a documentary I saw about the ship, isn't that a coincidence??

    it's a super song.
