Interpol

sorabji.com: What song or tune is going through your head right now?: Interpol

My brother got me Interpol's new album, "Turn on the Bright Lights," for Christmas -- I really like it. It's true that they sound a lot like Joy Division (though is that so bad?), but they have a lot more energy and light in their music than JD ever did. It's true that there isn't any indication of creative brilliance propelling their songwriting or anything, but the songs and performance and lyrics are all solid. They have good ears. This is good music to drive home from far away to.

Oh, and they're leagues better than the Strokes/Hives/Vines/Stripes collective.

thanks for putting Joy Division in my head sugarpop.

don't you be dissin' the White Stripes.
    too cute.

By patrick on Monday, January 6, 2003 - 11:59 am:

the thing with the white stripes, strokes, hives etc is that there are tons of bands that have doing what they do, even better for decades and no one has noticed.

there's an atlanta band in particular (kazoo, sem iff you ever get out...see them) called the Subsonics. they've been around for nearly 12 years or something insane like that and the white stripes practically ripped them off word for word, note for note.

"doing what they do, even better"

    Amen to that.

Interpol does sound a lot like Joy Division, but they add a lot to that foundation and create their own sound. That redeems them.

Now I'm listening to this drum-and-bass stuff (I think -- I'm bad with labels) from this man who goes by the name Rjd2. I like it. It reminds me of some old Ninja Tune stuff I used to listen to, but I think this guy is American.

I listened to Autechre's LP5 a lot when I was at home. The song called "Calliper Remote" rocks my world.

i didnt get a lot of music for xmas. did you?

i did get kickass limited edition Stones cd that is essentially jam sessions and unreleased Abko tracks called "metamorphosis". its pretty ok.

and a friend gave me a cd by current pop band called Jurassic 5. Its kinda bleh, they've been playing it all over the alt/npr radio. its nice background music i suppose.

I got the aforementioned Interpol and Rjd2, as well as an album by this German band called The Notwist. They play sorta mellow electronic...pretty...music. I don't know what you'd call it, but it's not bad.

By Spider on Monday, January 6, 2003 - 03:38 pm:

Hey, Rjd2 samples Elliott Smith! That's neat.
