does anyone else think this is a sonically perfect album?

i've listened to it twice today and i'm just so impressed. it's not going to be my favorite album or anything like that but it sure does sound good. even though this album feels different than mezzanine, sinead o'connor seems to fit in so much better than liz fraser did.

By Rowlf on Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 09:07 pm:

I've seen a LOT of bad reviews, but will probably get it anyways...

By dave. on Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 11:27 pm:

in some cases, i distrust reviewers. there are those who tend to dwell on the past and rate how well the subject fits into the shoes it previously wore. it's a reflection of the general public who, by default, expect more of the same. linear progression satisfies the public appetite more than content or substance.

By Spider on Sunday, March 2, 2003 - 09:39 am:

Dave, what are the best songs, so I can download them?

By dave. on Sunday, March 2, 2003 - 12:57 pm:

i think they're all good. i'm not familiar enough to know them by name.

By Rowlf on Sunday, March 2, 2003 - 03:05 pm:

i think reviewers are giving it bad reviews because back in 98 Massive Attack got lumped into the Prodigy/Chemical Bros/etc bandwagon, even though I dont consider them part of it. I think they are more likely to brush it off now because it isnt relevant to them as part of a trend, something too many mainstream reviewers take too much into consideration.

If it was released a year after Mezzanine, I'd bet the reviews would be much better...

So yeah, mainstream critics, and as well, some of the bandwagon from 98, have abandoned MA... similar to the way they have abandoned Garbage and Primal Scream. Well, to be honest, the last Garbage album was genuinely bad.

I like this album, good songs include Future Proof, Special Cases, and Antistar. Still I think my favorite album sofar this year has to be Royksopp's Melody AM and the Postal Service's Give Up.

Coming up this month is a new Matthew Good album, later in the year a Radiohead album, and Portishead album. Radiohead's going to do a collab with Sigur Ros, that should be interesting.

By dave. on Monday, March 3, 2003 - 02:19 am:

    frog porn

100th window songs 1 through 5. later, i'll post the second half.

that royksopp got a lot of good reviews but it doesn't do much for me.

By Spider on Monday, March 3, 2003 - 11:19 am:

Nuts, I'm too late -- can't access that site from work.

I tried downloading "A Prayer for England," "Everywhen," and "Future Proof" off Kazaa, but I couldn't get the files to play....like, no sound came out of my MP3 player. I don't know what was up with that.

Well, I guess I'll just have to buy the album then. I did hear one song off it on the radio a few weeks ago and I liked it...don't know what it was called. I do remember thinking, "Is this...Massive Attack??" and getting excited.

Do any of you have Beth Gibbons' (from Portishead) solo album?

By Devotchka on Monday, March 3, 2003 - 01:33 pm:

Yeah, Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man? It's pretty good, I like a couple songs off it, especially Mysteries. It feels willowy and dated. The whole album feels somewhat haunted and hollow.

Where are you looking at all these reviews?

By wisper on Monday, March 3, 2003 - 06:31 pm:

the solo album isn't as good as Portisehead, imho.
still good, but it's no NY Live.

    but then again, what is.....?

By agatha on Monday, March 3, 2003 - 07:41 pm:

Dave's a little obsessed with the frogs, these days.

I like Mum, and Notwist. It's all Dave's fault.

By dave. on Monday, March 3, 2003 - 08:46 pm:

spider, i can keep that stuff up there as long as you need, if you like. i'm in no hurry. or, you can buy it.

devotchka, i usually google the band name and, if it's not too obscure, there'll be a ½ doxen sites with a review. pitchfork, nme, and a few others tend to have something to say about stuff like this.

múm are totally cool. i'd love to see them live. twee as fuck.

By Spider on Wednesday, March 5, 2003 - 08:33 am:

Dave, I bought the album last night. I am impressed, especially with the second track, which I am unable to take off "repeat." It's perfectly dissonant, and I love it.

By dave. on Wednesday, March 5, 2003 - 09:57 am:

cool. i have to admit track 5 is starting to stand out as a weaker track. it's a great driving album -- there's a definite feeling of motion. especially when driving through the parking garage at work.

By Spider on Wednesday, March 5, 2003 - 10:34 am:

Yeah, last night I listened to it while driving through shady parts of town, and it made a perfect soundtrack.

By Rowlf on Wednesday, March 5, 2003 - 10:29 pm:

I got Massive Attack. 'tis quite good.

I also got Possessed. Heh heh. This death metal in-joke from 1985, sounds all tinny and punk, they look all hair band yet their guitar player is the same guy from Primus, Larry Lalonde

By dave. on Wednesday, March 5, 2003 - 10:40 pm:

    i knew that!

By Nate on Wednesday, March 5, 2003 - 11:28 pm:

    i grew up with primus.

By Agatha on Thursday, March 6, 2003 - 07:21 pm:

meaning, you nursed on your mama's bosom to primus's soothing melodies?

    or

in your kindergarten picture, you are standing next to a young les claypool?

By Nate on Thursday, March 6, 2003 - 09:41 pm:

the latter, except les is older than me and i was friends with his cousin.

and primus first sucked in my neck of the woods.
