9.7 out of 10 music nerds agree!

This is my official "go find this!" album of this year, last year it was Broken Social Scene, now its the Arcade Fire... it has a lot of the same feel, collaborative and a number of slightly different styles over the course of an entire album.. its possum

By dave. on Saturday, November 13, 2004 - 03:50 pm:

i'll have to give it another try. i know it got great reviews but it didn't grab me and i didn't give it enough time to figure it out. it seemed kinda echo and the bunnymen.

By kazu on Saturday, November 13, 2004 - 04:53 pm:

I've had this on my list to listen to for a while.

Rowlfe, have you heard the new Isis?

By Rowlfe on Saturday, November 13, 2004 - 05:44 pm:

I havent seen it in stores yet. Supposed to be their best yet.

They're playing here soon. I have to see if I'm working that day...

By kazu on Saturday, November 13, 2004 - 06:03 pm:

I just feel compelled toward any album called
    *Panopticon"

    What know you of Pelican?

By Rowlfe on Saturday, November 13, 2004 - 07:21 pm:

    I know nothing

By dave. on Saturday, November 13, 2004 - 08:35 pm:

i've heard panopticon. i can't really tell it from oceanic but that's maybe because i'm trending away from metal.

By dave. on Saturday, November 13, 2004 - 09:20 pm:

kyuss without the swagger. not necessarily a bad thing.

By dave. on Sunday, November 14, 2004 - 03:07 am:

    metal album of awesomeness:

    Mastodon - Leviathan

By kazu on Saturday, December 18, 2004 - 11:20 am:

    Sem likes them too.

I wish we could be here for New Year's. I'd take him
    to see them.

I got the new Isis. It's at me mum's house now.

By semillama on Monday, December 20, 2004 - 10:39 am:

Mastodon puts on one HELL of a show. They're on my list of bands never to miss if they're in town.

I just got the new Anthrax which is a collection of tunes from the pre-John Bush days that they went in and recorded as if they were playing them live - minimal if any overdubs. The tunes were all selected by the fans. I haven't listened to the whole thing yet but it's pretty awesome. Bush OWNS those older songs, I tell you.

I also got the new Ministry - sounds like the took up where "The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste" and that is a very good thing in my book. Best Ministry album in years.

    great.

By Jim aka Pajama on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 - 03:17 pm:

Arcade Fire is awesome. I love Neighborhood #4 (7 Kettles). It's my current #1 chill out song.

By kazu on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 - 03:30 pm:

I listened to that this morning on the way into work.

By semillama on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 - 05:37 pm:

I just listened to the album this afternoon, and cited it as one of the few bright spots in the otherwise incredibly dull alternative music scene these days.

I also just finished listening to Pelican - The fire in our throats will Beckon the Thaw - what a great album that is.

Kazu turned me on to both those bands.

By Spider on Sunday, July 16, 2006 - 02:05 pm:

My roommate has the Arcade Fire album, and I'm not really feeling it. Maybe if I had discovered it on my own and thought it was my own little secret (as I felt when I first heard Neutral Milk Hotel), but knowing this album was/is insanely popular makes me think, "....This? For reals? I don't get the hype."

    That's verbatim, btw.

I like, in a vague, non-attached way, "Crown of Love" and "Neighborhood #2."

Kyuss without the swagger? But that's the best part!

Hey, has anyone heard the Eagles of Death Metal? Is it good?

And I love the new(ish) Interpol album. It's bland, but there's something there. There's some there there, if you will. "Take You on a Cruise" is my favorite song off of that album.

I bought the new Thom Yorke solo album off Amazon, but it's shipping to my dad's house, and (long story short) I won't get to listen to it until August 5. I hope (and confidently anticipate) that it is worth the wait.

By dave. on Sunday, July 16, 2006 - 03:17 pm:

i think the first eagles of death metal is really good. very crude and spontaneous, but it rocks out.

the new album seems to try too hard to be spontaneous and the songs just aren't as good.

josh homme is one of my favorite musicians. he's rock music's king midas. i like that he doesn't look the part at all. back in the early 90's, my brother saw the screaming trees and told me they had some fratboy playing rhythm guitar. turns out, it was josh.

By Margret on Sunday, July 16, 2006 - 05:04 pm:

I have the new Thom Yorke playing in the car. I haven't focused down on one tune yet that I have to hear on repeat...that's usually the way it goes for me...but I haven't listened through 2x yet...which is usually when the obsession for one thing kicks in.

By Spider on Sunday, July 16, 2006 - 07:49 pm:

Josh Homme is, in my book, really, really hot. "Skin on Skin" is hot. The Desert Sessions with PJ Harvey -- also hot (so is that video with the two of them in the car, even though she's wearing some ugly yellow top). The fact that he looks like Craig Kilborn is, surprisingly, a plus. This I cannot explain.

So, it looks like I better get the first Eagles of Death Metal album.

Margret, you have kept the fires of my hope alive.

By Margret on Monday, July 17, 2006 - 12:19 am:

Aaaaaaand we hit 2x on the way to see my friend Jenn today aaaaaaaand we have obsession. More on this after I run out to the car and pull the cd out and check the song titles and put it in the laptop so I can listen to it while I'm falling asleep on the couch.

    Black Swan
    ----------
What will grow quickly, that you can't make straight
It's the price you gotta pay
Do yourself a favour and pack you bags
Buy a ticket and get on the train
Buy a ticket and get on the train

Cause this is fucked up, fucked up
Cause this is fucked up, fucked up

People get crushed like biscuit crumbs
And laid down in the bed you made
You have tried your best to please everyone
    But it just isn't happening
    No, it just isn't happening

And it's fucked up, fucked up
And this is fucked up, fucked up
This your blind spot, blind spot
It should be obvious, but it's not.
But it isn't, but it isn't

You cannot kickstart a dead horse
You just crush yourself and walk away
I don't care what the future holds
Cause I'm right here and I'm today
With your fingers you can touch me

I'm your black swan, black swan
But I made it to the top, made it to the top
This is fucked up, fucked up

You are fucked up, fucked up
This is fucked up, fucked up

Be your black swan, black swan
I'm for spare parts, broken up

By Spider on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 11:53 am:

Have heard Thom Yorke's "The Eraser" and love it.

This man. I don't know by what magic this occurs, but
he's got a direct line to my subconscious. We're
subconsious-mates, if not soul-mates (the third of the
soul involving the Intellect, at any rate).

I love the way "Harrowdown Hill" starts with that slap-
bass line, and you think this is going to something you
can dance to, and then the chords start and, oh, no. I
    love that.

By dave. on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 03:32 pm:

i had a brief crush on radiohead a few years ago. but i really just liked the song with the video where everone ends up on the sidewalk. best video ever.

i have no musical crushes right now. i've been listening to the causey way but that's wearing thin. i like the women's voices. i think one of them is a phoenix.

By dave. on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 03:38 pm:

    2 phoenix. summer and rain.

    what's up with that family?

By wisper on Sunday, July 30, 2006 - 11:27 am:

Joaquin, River, Rain or "Rainbow Joan of Arc", Liberty Butterfly or "Libertad Mariposa", and Summer or "Summer Joy".

By Spider on Sunday, July 30, 2006 - 01:44 pm:

I might drop 15 points in your estimation by admitting
this, but I must: I am currently riding a resurgence of my
crush on the Beastie Boys. This was brought on my a
re-viewing of their video collection (on DVD, put out by
Criterion). They are just so cute! Morsel-sized Adam
Horovitz, in particular -- I want one of him for my own.

The DVD set is pretty awesome, too -- you can listen to
lots of remixes, watch many of the videos from different
angles, listen to the band's commentary (which, while
not exactly stimulating, reinforces my opinion of them
as people I'd like to include in my circle of friends), etc.

By agatha on Sunday, July 30, 2006 - 09:52 pm:

I love the Beastie Boys, and always will. You haven't dropped any points in my book. I can speak for Dave on this account, as well.

I'm currently listening to a bad "greatest hits of the 80's" CD. "Bette Davis Eyes" is on right now. How's that for negative musical hipness points?

By Nate on Monday, July 31, 2006 - 12:15 am:

By moonit on Monday, July 31, 2006 - 02:12 am:

My friend always thought that song was called Better Days and Nights.

By Spider on Monday, July 31, 2006 - 08:09 pm:

Hey...did you ever notice how many of the Beastie Boys videos
involve them pretending to get into a fistfight with each other?
Sabotage, Body Moving, Intergalactic, Ch-Check it Out...

    It makes you think.

    (Not really.)

We need body rocking, not perfection
Let me get some action from the back section
