is this really necessary? is this where you are as a country now? |
This is only an issue in Washington man. Each year it comes up. The goes away. Every single fucking year. Those 2 year crackpots in the house have nothing else better to do. It passes, then it goes to the Senate where it's shot down. I can assure you if it passes (which it won't), a lot more flags will be burned including my own. |
One even made national news. This one didn't even do the most damage... |
just when you think texas can't get any more dangerous. |
For starters, under the U.S. Flag code, the only way to properly dispose of a flag is burning. Several people in the senate have pointed this out, mainly the opponents to the amendment. But I think it's important to distinguish burning and desecration, because actually the amendment could have quite far-reaching consequences depending on who gets to define desecration. Pooping on the flag? Scribbling on it? Letting it touch the ground (according to the U.S. Flag code)? The senate does look pretty tight on this one because of the Republican stranglehold. Get your protected free speech in now! |
It's kind of like the big oil and gas plant exlosions in Houston. They happen about once a month now. Is the media even speculating that terrorists are to blame? Nope, just the opposite. It's usually, "Massive explosion at oil refinery today. Experts say terrorists are not to blame..." Yeah, Rowlfe, what DeLay said about Houston is all the more ironic because of what's been going on there and in Dallas. |
I only brought it up because our media here is painting this like this is the best chance theres ever been that the Senate could actually pass this thing... its funny that flag burning isnt even a problem... but pass the amendment and it will be. anyways, the two slippery slopes here are that 1) this is close enough to enforcement of patriotism that the f bomb (fascism) is going to be making its way into conversation... and 2) most importantly, what makes something a flag? how will they define it? is this a flag? http://www.chubbswebdesign.co.uk/mens-underwear-boxers-webundies/american-flags.jpg is this a flag? http://www.bandbleather.com/product/2303.jpg are these flags? http://imagescommerce.bcentral.com/merchantfiles/4782367/2621-4801.jpg |
so here's a link to a pretty good page about the subject. |
i'm up til 4am almost every night lately, emailing art directors. I'm waiting for this dude from the las vegas weekly to get back to me. it seems like he's biting. |
i still don't think it will pass. |
on the bright side, motherfuckers won't be able to fly a flag from their pickemup trucks. |
ofcourse, i think it's disprespectful but if some wanker wants to do it..then so be it.. |
Man, check out the fury coming out of spunky in that one. Nice. |
i identify with it about as much as i identify with the flag of fucking atlantis. it's a symbol of a myth. not that i want to burn it or anything. that would give it too much symbolic importance. if that makes me hippy, then we need more hippy -- and a lot more soap and water. |
the u.s. isn't perfect by any means..i've never been so disheartened by where our country stands than i am now.. but, like you said so perfectly...the flag stands for all of those things NOT for who is in office or the dumb ass politicians and their fucked up decisions... fools or assholes? wow..i don't really know what to say to that... |
no, we're not perfect. not even close. we have been very lucky. so far. i suspect that the challenges of the rest of the world are finally nipping at our own heels. we could have gone the route of bringing the world up to our standard of living but, instead, it looks like we're gonna get a feel for life in a country without a middle class. thank bill clinton for that. he signed nafta so a republican didn't hafta. thanks, bubba. yeah, fools or assholes. |
not flying one till america lives up to an idealized dream seems passive and boring. burning doesn't say "change the existing". it says "get rid off." i say do all the shit you keep complaining about and fly a flag. smoke a joint in a public place and fly a flag. marry your life partner and fly a flag. hell, burn a flag and fly a flag. if we do this enough, they'll outlaw flag-flying. problem solved. |
american flag lovers can lick and suck a temporary american flag tattoo off of my ballsac. they besmirch and contradict the founders' ideals for this nation. america, fuck yeah! is not good enough. it's psychotic. |
and does not besmirch the infallible wisdom of the founding fathers. |
the american flag has been taken by the neo-con movement. what it stands for in the hearts of many americans is defiled by how it is being used to forward our march towards totalitarianism. i'm not going to tattoo certian sacred hindu symbols on my chest solely because hitler coopted the swastika and it is now burned into western consciousness as a symbol of the nazi party. i love what the american flag stands for. i dispise what it is currently being used for. i think dave.'s attitude is complacent. as complacent as those who fly the flag, proud of bush and the nation because the idea of an american president who is patently evil is so fundamentally disturbing that they will do anything to ignore it. i think a constitutional ban on flag burning is the only way to make it constitutionally OK to ban this speech, and it is disturbing that it even has a chance of passing the senate. here you really start to see dave.'s point, in that the consitution is in a very basic way America. it is the corner stone in a nearly literal sense, and whenever it is changed the nature of america changes in a fundamental way. i am sure it is horrifying for some veterans to see a flag burning. it is definitely disrespectful to burn a flag. but it is unamerican to abridge someone's opportunity to disrespect. it should never be illegal, never be criminal. but, maybe it can cause damage. and maybe that damage can be recouped with civil tort law. that should be the only recourse. not some crazy swipe at the basic code of the nation. |
dave..and i don't mean canada for crying out loud..ofcourse, if you got more up close and personal with their socialist health care you'd realize it sucks ass.. i went to a country where they made gum illegal..i was freaking out when i went over the border..i'd forgotten to throw out my gum contraband.. go visit someplace like THAT and you'll have more appreciation for what you can do and say in the u.s. but, dave, i appreciate your thoughts on this..and i hope you appreciate the fact that you're allowed to have those thoughts.. and when i fly my flag this weekend..hopefully images of your ballsack in my head won't ruin it for me.. |

military recruiting databases anti american amendments lies about the ongoing war china bids to buy super large american oil co. we're selling our collective souls at such an alarming rate. jesus christ. |
and left-winged. |
It's crazy-winged. The taking of private land for public use is certainly left-winged, but this is taking of private land for private use. The only requirement is that it might concievably encourage economic growth. What it ends up meaning is that the rich and influential can now take property if they want it. |
ooh, ho ho ho! your system is ever so much better, i presume??? just going to ignore every report and study consistantly calling it the best system ON EARTH, are you? ON-FUCKING-EARTH. YOU FUCKING COCK. Best health system EVER concieved of by human kind thus far: socialist healthcare. See- Canada and Norway. right then. jolly good. |
was there ever any doubt that the gov't could take your property if they want to? the idea that we own anything is essentially a crock of shit. what we own is the liability for any costs attributed to something. the only thing stopping the gov't from confiscating all our stuff is that it works out better for them if the public assumes responsibility for the stuff wherever possible. |
sweet. |
i said no such thing about our health care being wonderful...just that so many people yearn and gush over how nice it would be to have a socialist health care..and it is great..so long as nothing seriously is wrong with you.. how about those 6 month waiting lists for serious surgeries..(which, i might add, in socialism can be avoided if you have the cash and go to a private doctor/hospital)so..again..the wealthy win that system too! i had someone say to me, who is under such a health system, if you didn't have the cash to go to a private doctor and you had something like *gasp* cancer..then you were basically screwed..(6 month waiting list for chemo!?) so quit acting like your health system is the bees knees... |
we (the US government) already pays more per capita on healthcare than Canada. the US taxpayer subsidizes Canadian prescriptions. we subsidize drugs for most of the world. |
i concede. |
Now, I'm not happy with the decision, but I find it funny that the people crying the loudest about it are the right wing. They've been having a firesale of our civil liberties since 9/11, but take away their stuff? HELL NO! You can't take away my STUFF!! What a bunch of pussies. |
and everything is everybody else's fault. and don't expect us to be worked up over your problems, because your lucky to get this. and you never see anybody. everything is done through faxes, mail, or phone. so one day i would get a letter from south carolina. "your request for a wheelchair has been refused." i have to call south carolina, on my dime, to find out why. "line 36 on your application wasn't initialed by your doctor. have it initialed and send it back. if we find something else wrong with it you are not allowed to apply again for 6 months. meanwhile the chair is falling apart. one day one side of the back rest snaps off. i go to see if i can get it fixed. turns out, the company that built this chair went out of business. healthcare companies or stores are always going out of business. so i found a guy to drill out a couple of pipes for me to shove up the tubing of the backrest and re-attach it. oh yeah, and the upholstery is coming apart. you know how hard it is to find anybody to re-upholster a wheelchair? i even went to a guy in a wheelchair and he couldn't do it. but i finally got my chair. so i guess the system works. but i've already set up a special wheelchair reserve account for my next wheelchair. they cost between 3 and 4 thousand. one of those "a dollar here, a five there" things. next time, it's cold, hard cash. motherfucker |
ROFLMAO. |
just as it probably goes without saying your extended peoples here in sorabji would help with other things should south carolina try and screw you out of it. i hope i conveyed that without insulting any of your conventional sensibilities. |
though i don't know of what help anyone here could've been with the bureau of refusals in south carolina. my conventional sensibility is that help or aid is better as a concept than a reality. |
and stupid. as usual. |
are you going to build that deluxe wheelchair, or are you full of bullshit, as usual? |
it threatens to draw attention away from me. here, i've got projects for the both of you. v: you know what i really want? a manual elevator (or lift). like a platform with a chain and block-and-tackle pulley system (sort of like a large, open dumbwaiter) that would allow we to raise myself at least 1 story using just my arm strength. someone offered to build me one years ago, but i never took him up on it. jack: my gay cousin in austin needs a gay house builder. she's been trying to build a house on in the woods for the past 2 years and has already gone through two guys. if you can be any help at all it get you into the fast track of the austin gay community. |
i'm always happy to help. |
besides, i already knew about web sites like lambda business |
you must be having a ball, here. |
you must be having a grand time, yourself, sir. |
i'm gonna go eat toast |

V, you suck gnarly toe jam. And you're definitely quite the gayboi. |
you can have a crush on me, too. there's plenty to go around. i'm sure your crushes are more interesting than...some creatures' crushes. |
But I haven't had one for ages now. |
Dadadumbobumbo. |
wrong again, v. do you ever know what you're talking about? anyone who can read can see that cat has been posting here much longer than jack has. a person of average intelligence spending as much time as you obviously spend here would notice that. what a dope. |
V, you nailed it on the head. cat is jack and jack is cat. fuckin hot fuck man. |
actually, there are only three people posting here other than you, v. that's how we always know who your alteregos are. most of the world is blocked from this site. |
then cat-me would want to be me. |
I know I'm not Nate, 'cause I've met him. Therefore, my dick is not up patrick's ass. Somehow, that makes me weepy. 'tiggy wept. |
