Well, I can't say anything that you all haven't felt yourselves. I knew Kevin was losing money, but DAMN, I had no idea he was forking out so much! There are two issues here: first, keeping paranoia alive. Two: helping Kevin out of his money crunch.

It's very important to me to help Kevin any way we can, hell he's been footing the bill for us for a long time. I'm sending him a check for what I can, but it's just a drop in the bucket. Any lawyers on Paranoia? Maybe a little pro bono work?

Next, keeping paranoia running. I will be starting a virtual hosting server within the next month or so. I'm still checking with my upstream provider to see what the costs, etc would be for each of my options to help paranoia stay online.

As for the web server, it could be done several ways. Initially It could be set up to run as paranoia.mydomain.com until I get my colocated server running (several months), this would be the cheapest for me. Once my colo is set up I could alias the paranoia web addresses to run on my server (www.paranoia.com). Bandwidth for Kevin wouldn't be a problem since no web hits would go through Kevin's ISDN line. The web pages would reside on my server. My access is through 3 T-1s and a DS-3.

As for IRC, I have never used it, I know nothing about it, but my upstream provider has a TON of things they offer, I could get that added (probably once I have my own colocated server) for a setup fee, then free (probably bandwidth charges would be assessed to me, but once I have ten domains registered I pay no further bandwidth charges- only my $350/month internet connection fee)

If Kevin can keep the ISDN online, My server could handle some of the other stuff. Like I said, I'm still checking on the expense to me. Does anybody know what kind of traffic paranoia has, what bandwidth the webserver uses and IRC?

Also, since I know absolutely nothing about IRC, maybe someone with knowledge of this could fill me in? I know what it is, but tell me how busy it is on paranoia, how many people use bots and security issues with them. What are some of the things that make paranoia's IRC server unique?

Needless to say, if any one wanted to register a domain name, and host it on my box, I'd be glad to help them, and that might help defray my costs of helping host parts of paranoia, whatever that might be. I estimate that I'd be able to offer a virtual domain for around $5 a month, plus internic fees ($100 then $50 annually after that)

Needless to say, I won't be on the IRC discussion, but I'll be checking for transcripts. Any one wanting to comment can reach me at:

I've pretty much off-loaded our site off paranoia's back, hopefully completing the move before June 1st. We probably
weren't in the top 10 of hits but got ~200K/mo... I'd love to keep my paranoia account. I have offered to "park" the domain on my new home. You seem to be a lot further ahead. While I'm sure many of us will continue to support Kevin's plight, we could pay for _your_ expense of keeping paranoia alive. $50-80/yr would be about what I could afford - I'm paying ~$350/yr for my new home (300MB unlim traffic + several accounts) All
I need from paranoia is a redirect for my personal pages. We already moved www.repairfaq.org. Just e-mail would be fine with me if I could reasonably EXPECT it to be around for a while.
Like you I don't do IRC (or windows :-)

Coolness. I've also got something hatching for a possible
replacement location. Don't give up hope. More later.
