By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 02:12 pm:

Ok, you win...I'll agree with ANYTHING you say right now because I need help sooooooooo bad. I've been at this problem now for 1 solid week and I'm totally out of answers.
    You smart and sexy bitch.

    Hi Agatha!!

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 02:16 pm:

Hey, I never knew you could do colors here...

By dave. on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 02:18 pm:

    shu'up, tiggy.

    i know i look goood.

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 02:20 pm:

    Great...now look what I've started!

By kazu on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 02:21 pm:

I had a whole bunch of spyware problems this weekend. Basically these little buggers invaded my computer and this one guy TopText threw advert links into almost every site I visited. It made sorabji into a playground for dating, balding, banking, performance, and longdistance solutions.

By kazu on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 02:23 pm:

    "i know i look goood"

I hear this in Stewie Griffin's voice. From Family Guy. He says something very similar to Brian after getting caught putting on Louis' lipstick.

By Antigone on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 02:26 pm:

No, dani, no colors here. Simply not possible

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 02:29 pm:

My computer is running just fine but I am unable to do something on this new laptop that I used to be able to just fine on my old desktop. I'm pulling my hair out for a week now and I'm just out of answers. It's probably something sooo stupid that I am going to kick myself in the ass for not being able to figure out on my own but I simply can't. And if anyone can help, it's Dave.

By J on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 02:30 pm:

I can't get my scanner to work and there is nothing wrong with it,it has to do with Windows XP home I think.Hi Dani:)

By dave. on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 02:30 pm:

i say it in the spirit of the fat skanks on jerry springer. hand on hip, finger wagging.

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 02:32 pm:

Colors look really nice here. Big change from the plain ole black and white.

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 02:32 pm:

    Hi J!!!

By kazus inner child on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 02:36 pm:

This is a post about colors, colors

    You see them all about

There's red on the stop sign

    green on the trees

blue in the sky and sea!!!!

    RED STAND UP!
    GREEN STAND UP!
    BLUE AND YELLOW SIT DOWN.

Someone please help me get out of this brain space. In about an hour I will be finished all of my final papers...from last year. Persons with procrastination tendencies such as mine should never take Incompletes.

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 02:56 pm:

Ok, so I just got off the phone with Dave and he can't help me. He told me to post my problem here and maybe someone else knows the solution...here it is...
I have been going to Kazaa for years now and burning movies with no problems. I get this new laptop last month and I went to Kazaa to get a movie for my Husband and I was UNABLE to preview it. So, I went ahead and paid the 29.95 for the Kazaa Plus. Still won't work. When I try and play the movie in Media Player, it just keeps saying error downloading codec....when I try and play it in QuickTime, it just keeps saying You may experience problems playing a video track because the required compressor could not be found. I went and downloaded the Divx Bundle and it won't play there either. I have tried downloading every codec pack I can find on the internet and it still won't work.
Tech support keeps telling me to make sure that I have the latest versions of Windows Media Player and QuickTime...I do have all the latest versions...when I download the K-lite codec pack, media player will say it's playing but I get no picture and no sound.
I'm totally mental over this and any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
And thanks alot Dave for trying to help me!
PS: I also tried infranview, 3ivx, Divx, and I can't remember which other ones and they won't work there either.

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 03:05 pm:

I also tried Winamp...RealOne...won't work either

By patrick on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 03:26 pm:

laptops, in my limited point of view just seem to present a multitude of problems that ive never experienced on desktops. i don't know if there's a correlation there, but i have less powerful, older desktops that run so much better than the newer, faster laptops.

    for what its all worth

By TBone on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 03:29 pm:

Hmm. Could just be a bogus movie.

Or does this happen with every movie?

By heather on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 03:33 pm:

    go buy the dvd?

By kazu on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 03:35 pm:

My laptop drives me nuts. If I get another one, I'm getting a Mac like my friend D. His is so pretty and he never complains about it. I can save about $600 with my student discount.

This is, quite possibly, the last thing I should be thinking about right now.

Dani, I emailed your post to my most smartest tech friend. I'll let you know if he has any advice.

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 04:01 pm:

Thanx Patrick...I really love this new laptop. I have always downloaded movies and burned them and for some reason, I can't now. I even PAID to be legal and still can't do it. I gave Kim my Desktop and I tried it on her computer last night and it won't work either.

Um...Walking Tall aint out on DVD Heather. I have not bought a DVD or a CD in years...I just download and burn them.I downloaded and burned the new Usher CD last night for Kim and it came out just fine. It's just the movies I can't preview/watch.
I have downloaded 27 different versions of the same movie from different users and none of them will work.
My neighbor went and downloaded the very same movie and she is able to watch it just fine..I don't get it.
Happens with every movie T-Bone...BUT...by MISTAKE...one of the Walking Tall's that I downloaded came out as a Lesbian Porn flick and I can watch that just fine..someone told me to go download a commercial so I downloaded the old Michael Jackson Pepsi commercial and I can watch that just fine also.
Thank you Kazu...any help is appreciated.

By kazu on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 04:11 pm:

I'm trying to gain as much knowledge as I can about this stuff so that I can burn things for lesson plans for when I teach next year.

By patrick on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 04:12 pm:

kazu...i have a friend who has a powerbook and he says he constantly runs into the same trouble nico and i do with our two laptops. we can't figure it out. we dont even come close to maxing out the hard drive or memory and for some reason it acts up all the fucking time. i've resigned to using my pentium 100 tower with a 1 gig drive sitting in the garage collecting dust for my financial software as I dont want to put any sensitive data on these fucking lap tops. I expect them to drop sometime soon.

By kazu on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 04:17 pm:

I will keep that in mind.

I would use my desktop more, if I had a desk chair. That computer, made by some company that no longer exists, has never given me any trouble, but it is really old and will need to be replaced for when I start my prospectus and dissertation. I still want a mac though.

By dave. on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 04:20 pm:

dani, one thing you might check would be to go ahead and try to open the movie in media player.

    let it error out.

    close it.

right click on my computer and select 'manage'.

expand the event viewer and click 'application'.

check the timestamp or sort newest to oldest. see if there are any very recent errors relating to media player.

if not, do the same with 'system'.

if there are any errors, try to get an error code or any other info you can from the description given. here's an example: "Unable to open the Server service. Server performance data will not be returned. Error code returned is in data DWORD 0."

google the error code or description and see what comes up. it'll probably link you to some tech forums where some poor soul is having the same problem.

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 04:55 pm:

There are lots of errors and here's some of the details...

    0000: 41 70 70 6c 69 63 61 74 Applicat
    0008: 69 6f 6e 20 48 61 6e 67 ion Hang

then it says all this stuff about Fault Bucket31462623

then I also have all these warnings that say VirusScan McShield received an invalid file name NaiFiltr device driver. received name = \GLOBAL??\TFSWIFS
    process=tfsw.ctrl.exe

The names of all the errors are:
    application hang
    WLTRYSVC

The names of the warnings are all McLogEvent

Under system, there are several error messages...the source name is ServiceControl

There is alot of crap in there about my McAfee stuff..

the error codes say event error 1001

    Dave, I also found this:

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 04:57 pm:

Oh, and by the way Dave, now when I try to preview a movie in Media Player, it says playing but there is no sound or picture.

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 04:59 pm:

Does the fact that I am on a wireless router connected to the desktop DSL have anything to do with it by any chance?!?!

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 05:06 pm:

maybe my antivirus, firewalls, privacy service through McAfee is preventing me from watching my downloaded shit?!?!?
I went to the Microsoft forums but thats to technical for me to understand.
I'm not quite sure what to google...

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 05:09 pm:

Hmmm..now on the bottom right of the preview screen on my media player, it says divx and goes away after a few seconds..then it says playing but again, no picture or sound.

By dave. on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 05:15 pm:

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 05:16 pm:

    MPEG videos play perfect...

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 05:20 pm:

Dave,I had some 4cc changer thing and something called G-spot (ha ha) but I didn't know how to use them so I deleted them...they came with the K-lite codec pack....
I just went to that site Dave but I don't know what to download..
Whenever you guys give up, let me know and I'll quit bugging you!!!

By wisper on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 05:34 pm:

    i agree with heather.

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 05:37 pm:

It's kind of like this..if you knew how to ride a bike for years and then all of the sudden you couldn't, you would want to know why all of the sudden you can no longer ride that bike. And learn again.

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 05:45 pm:

You agree with Heather that I should go buy the DVD when it's not even out yet?

By kazu on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 05:50 pm:

Do you mean the 1973 movie, part of a trilogy or something else?

That one is out on DVD.

I always buy DVDs and CDs. It's better that way and I am a sucker for packaging. Sometimes people burn things for me though.

By wisper on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 05:56 pm:

you could wait for it to come out.

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 05:59 pm:

The new Walking Tall movie that is playing in theatres now.
My husband has been wanting to watch it so I am trying to get it for him...
It has The Rock and Johnny Knoxville in it. I have no patience for theatres because I have to hold still!! I prefer watching movies at home so I can pause for phone, kids, food, drink, etc...etc...without missing anything.

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 06:02 pm:

I hear you Wisper but it's just driving me crazy that I am unable to do something that I have been doing for years.
Plus, I have already paid for this downloading service so I don't have to run to the stores and buy CD'S or DVD'S. So technically, I am buying my movies and music. Just not from the stores.

By kazu on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 06:02 pm:

    Oh that one.

"I can pause for phone, kids, food, drink, etc...etc...without missing anything"

Are you kidding, watching it like that makes you miss EVERYTHING.

    But that's just me.

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 06:05 pm:

I offered hubby the lesbian porn flick that I accidently downloaded but he passed on it. Oh well.

By Dani on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 06:09 pm:

The last time we actually went to the movies, I sat there the whole time wondering how many business calls I missed...having to pee soooooooooo bad and not wanting to miss any of the movie....Kids wanting more popcorn and candy and soda...so I ended up missing so much of the movie that it wasn't even worth it to go.
Plus I have a problem holding still for long periods of time. I like to always be doing something.

I know, I'm a pain in the ass.

By dave. on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 - 01:59 am:

dani, do you have the latest version of directx?

By dave. on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 - 02:17 am:

btw, i feel the same about movies. i'm reluctant to commit myself to sitting there for a couple hours in front of a movie. i usually get over it if it's a good movie but many times, if it's a rental, i'll just sort of wander off if it gets boring.

By TBone on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 - 11:16 am:

I was known for my tendancy to disappear during rented movies.
    .
I'm better now, but I still will rarely make it through a whole movie if I'm alone.
    .
If I've seen the movie before, it's rough.

By Dani on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 - 05:35 pm:

Yup, I went and got DirectX the other day when a friend asked me if I had it. I deleted all 27 movies and download 10 more and they STILL won't play Dave....a friend is coming over today @ 5:30 to see if she can help...thanx for the suggestion. I'll let you know if she is able to help any..
I dont do the theatres...I like to be in the comfort of my own home watching a movie.
    Cant wait till 5:30!!

By Dani on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 - 05:58 pm:

Oh, and did I tell you Dave that when I go to play a movie in media player a divx video logo appears on the bottom right of the player screen and goes away after a few seconds....then media player says playing but there's nothing....kinda weird how the logo shows up but the freakin' movie won't play.

By Dani on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 - 06:08 pm:

check this out...yesterday was the first time I posted my danettekelly@yahoo e-mail address anywhere on the internet and I get this in my inbox today...

    Scan result: Virus "W32.Netsky.P@mm" found.
You can not download this attachment. You have two options:
    1. Sign up for Yahoo! Mail Plus to get automatic cleaning of infected attachments. Learn more.
(Note: Not all viruses can be cleaned.)
    2. Contact the message sender and request that they resend the attachment to you after cleaning it with anti-virus software.

I posted that address here at sorabji yesterday for the first time.

    the e-mail came from:
    coolruehl@aol.com

The subject was Thanks! with an attachement...so me being the curious asshole that I am, decided to see if it was a virus...being that my family is the only people that have that address, I just thought it was strange that all of the sudden I got that e-mail.

By Antiogne on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 - 06:27 pm:

I'm sure spammers scan this site all of the time. I like yahoo's spam protection, though. It's pretty accurate, though it sometimes eats e-mail from people I know, especially if subject of their mail is "Look at this!" or "Check this out!"

By Dani on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 - 09:56 pm:

I should have never used that address here Antigone because I think your right, some spammer fuck head got it from here. The only e-mails I have ever got at that address for the last 2 years is from family and closest friends. Now some idiot invaded my safe-place.

Oh, and Dave, I just got another e-mail from Kazaa tech support...keep in mind that I have already got this same exact e-mail from them 5 times already in the last week...here it is:

    Dear Kazaa Plus User,

Thank you for contacting us at Kazaa Plus Customer Support.

Please be informed that, Sharman Networks has no control over the content shared by users of P2P software. The clarity and quality of the video or audio files you have downloaded depends on the user who created the file.

Further note that, you may not have the Codec you need to play that part of the file. Codec’s are different systems of encoding sound or video files. Upgrading to the latest version of Windows Media Player and installing the latest version of QuickTime will ensure you have the most popular Codecs installed on your system. If the file still doesn’t work, the problem may be with the underlying media file. Sharman has no control over the quality of media files made available by users.

We would appreciate any additional comments or suggestions you may have that would allow us to improve our service.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.

    Best regards,
    Kazaa Plus Customer Support.

Patience and understanding my ass....I'm totally out of both.

Friend did not come over at 5:30 today..she's coming tomorrow instead.

By dave. on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 - 11:04 pm:

    dani, try this.

it's another codec pack. select "full" install. some of them may be a little old but it's worth a shot. there's also a jpg of a screenshot showing a bunch of other multimedia utilities. if you see anything you might need, let me know and i can make it available.

also, have you tried to open the files using the older media player, mplayer2.exe. i pretty much never use wmplayer.exe unless i absolutely have to. have you tried the latest realplayer?

By Dani on Wednesday, April 28, 2004 - 01:42 pm:

Ok, Dave...just got home so I'm going to get situated and do as you said. Thanx....I'll let you know how it goes!!

Have I told you lately how smart AND sexy you are?

By J on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 03:53 am:

What would it mean when I get a message that my windows media player cannot play this file.Connect to the internet or insert removable media on which the file is located then try again. I'm definitely connected to the internet.

By J on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 04:41 am:

It's working fine now,I actually fixed it,but my scanner still doesn't work.

By Dani on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 02:32 pm:

I'm going to do it now Dave...had shit loads of company half the night so I didn't get a chance to do it yesterday..let you know how it goes..

By Dani on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 02:51 pm:

downloaded the codecs.zip...extracted the file and it has a picture of codecs for Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and Nemo codec pack...I installed it and still NOTHING...

By dave. on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 04:12 pm:

i have a newer nimo codec pack, which i was looking for but only found after i posted the older one. the pic was just a screenshot of a folder full of multimedia codecs, dvd extraction tools and mastering utilities someone posted to usenet a few months ago, many of which are proprietary, obsolete, or unrelated to your issue. but there are also several versions of divx and some other crap that might help.

i'm stumped. have you messed with the settings in the tools\options\performance\advanced area?

    sorry.

By Dani on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 07:12 pm:

I've messed with everything I can think of...I think it's a lost cause. But thank you very much for all of your help. It's very appreciated. You tried and that's all we can do.

    tools\options\performance\advanced area where???

By dave. on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 07:41 pm:

    in windows media player.

    tools menu etc.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 12:40 am:

I have fucked with every setting there is...that friend came today and spent 2 hours on this and she couldn't figure it out either..I think I'm going to have to take it to a computer shop and have them figure it out. That friend went home tonight and downloaded the same exact movie that I did and she watched it and burned it with no problems...I just don't get it.

By heather on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 01:48 am:

dear computer store person: i will gladly pay some decent hunk of change to not have to pay for a movie i am too impatient to wait for and because i am too a.d.d. to sit in a theatre.

even though i could just get a copy from my friend.

    thanx.

By dave. on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 03:21 am:

not the point, heather. it should work and it doesn't. that's the point.

if it were me, and playing bootlegs was the most important thing, i'd spend a day formatting and reinstalling rather than a week fighting software. but i know many out there aren't comfortable doing that.

in fact, dani, you mention this is a new pc. it probably came with recovery discs. maybe just blow it all away and start over?

agatha got a new laptop a few months back and it has this hidden recovery partition that's like 5 gigs. it came with xp home but i have xp pro so i figgered i'd just blow away all the partitions and put a fresh xp pro install on it, get rid of all the sony crap, recover the 5 gigs, voila!

not. shit wouldn't start without that fucking partition set to hidden and the next partition set as active. it totally gave me that sinking feeling for a minute until i figgered out how to set it back proper.

i ended up upgrading to pro instead of clean installing so she still has all that sony crap and 5 worthless gigs hogged by recovery images and other bullshit.

but it's a pretty cool little laptop.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 01:53 pm:

Still clueless as usual I see Heather...I'll break it down for you a little...between business, kids, field trips, homework, projects, essays, volunteering, Kim's friends and their plans, family always here from NY, etc...etc...there really is not much free time. It's much more CONVENIENT to watch movies at our own pace and time then it is to sit in a theater. That's why I PAID to download them. Yes, I could always have a friend burn me a copy but it's something that I have been able to do for years and now suddenly I can not.
To the best of my knowledge, your not married and you have no children...so one day, when you do have the hectic life that I, and many others, do, maybe you'll understand. Until then, grow up and keep your stupid comments to yourself because I sure as fuck didn't ask for your ignorance.

If I felt comfortable doing what Dave would do, I would. I wouldn’t even know how to do most of what Dave knows how to do. I do have a copy of XP PRO but I'm a little scared to mess with this brand new laptop..
I do have recovery disks and I don't know anything about partitions and all that.
I did a system restore last night and went back to the time that I first bought this laptop which was about 5 weeks ago and I was a nervous wreck the whole time. It did not do any good so I undid the restore. I'm not good at all the technical computer stuff.
The point still remains that I am unable to do something that I have PAID to do and was always able to do.

Let's say for fuks sake that I had some sort of kinky fetish with...midgets....or....geriatrics fucking while taking massive amounts of Viagra...would I want to ask a friend to download a movie like that for me?? No, I would certainly want to do that from the privacy of my own home. Duh Heather.

I love this little laptop but I just have that one problem that I can't figure out.

When we travel long distance, I throw this laptop in the truck and Kim and her friends can watch movies while we travel. It's a handy little thing.

I just hoped that it was some stupid little setting soemwhere that I could fix and it would be OK.
I am going to call this computer shop today and make an appointment to bring this in and have them figure it out.
That's about my only option at this point.

    Dear Mr. Pat Sajak,
Could you PLEASE give Heather a clue once and for all?

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 01:53 pm:

    Thanx.

By Harvey Wordman on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 01:58 pm:

Anyone with business, kids, field trips, homework, projects, essays, volunteering, Kim's friends and their plans, family always here from NY and so forth, who still spells *thanks* with an *x* shouldn't yell at anyone else for being ignorant.

By Spider on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 02:06 pm:

Right, because one letter says so much.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 02:11 pm:

notice how genious Heather spelled Thanx?

So now it appears that Mr. Wordman has ALSO said that Heather is ignorant...interesting.

By Harvey on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 02:13 pm:

    In my world it does.

By Harvey on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 02:14 pm:

"In my world it does" was in response to Spider.

Otherwise, I live for Heather's ignorance. I find her x's cute.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 02:17 pm:

You know, in all honesty, the bickering and insulting here is REALLY old and it is NOT what I came here for the other day. I came to ask Dave for help and DAVE suggested that I post my problem and maybe someone else would be able to help.

The constant need for bickering and insulting here is not for me anymore.

Fight among yourselves all you want just leave me out of it. It aint my thing any more.

Yes, I did indeed say AINT.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 02:18 pm:

    Her x's are cute...especially Nate.

By Harvey. on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 02:18 pm:

Well, you should at least use the proper punctuation: ain't.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 02:21 pm:

punctuation here at the boards?? Are you kidding??
    Mr. Wordman is KINDA funny..

Half the shit posted here AINT even spelled right but people get the point of the messages.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 02:25 pm:

Does Agatha have a Dell laptop also Dave?

By kazu on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 02:30 pm:

I have a Dell laptop. I am ready to throw it across the room. I loathe this machine with every inch of my being.

Okay, well not that much. But seriously, it sucks. Now, it could very well be that I did something wrong, or ignored something I should have fixed. But it is a Dell.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 02:32 pm:

I'm thinking it has something to do with a Dell setting of some sort. I called Dell and they said there is nothing they can do because THEIR software and machine is running just fine.
Have you ever downloaded a movie and watched it on your Dell laptop Kazu?

By kazu on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 02:33 pm:

    No.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 02:34 pm:

    Shit.

By heather on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 02:47 pm:

    i am sorry.

i did fail to account for the geriatric midget porn. i have to admit that it just didn't occur to me.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 02:51 pm:

We're all entitled to a mistake here and there.

By patrick on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 02:57 pm:

Nico has two Dells and they both are fucking crap. Like Kazu, im ready to throw them out the god damn door.

Dani, I know from experience that certain DVDs and certain players just arent compatible. Angry Sam has a very expensive DVD player he bought when he was creating his movie. The motherfucker cost over $800. Now. Certain burned DVDs as well as certain mass produced DVDs don't play. Its fucked up. Yet, they will play on his Mac or on his cheaper DVD. Its really quite messed up and there seems to be a lacking in encoding, because what works on machine doesnt work elsewhere.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 03:03 pm:

Everyone told me to go with Dell so I did. I have not had any problems with the machine itself yet...but it's only 5 weeks old Patrick so we'll see.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 03:08 pm:

I wish I knew and felt confident enough to erase the entire freakin' machine and start over from scratch. But I'm scared shit to do that. I wouldnt even know how anyway.
    Way to complicated for me.
What I really wish is that Dave and Agatha were my neighbors so I could just bring this thing over to them.
I have this sick feeling that it is something very simple but God only knows what.

By J on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 03:19 pm:

Can't you have somebody that knows what they're doing give you remote assistance? Remember I'm computer stupid, but I know you have that option in xp.I know how frustrating it is Dani.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 03:30 pm:

I am so beyond frustrated J...I just called that computer shop I was going to bring this laptop to and the guy was super honest and told me to go to downloads.com and download every viewer I can find. He basically saved me time and money by telling me he has no idea why I can not play what I download.
I don't know what remote assistance is J...so actually, I am more computer stupid than you!!!

By dave. on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 03:36 pm:

    agatha has a sony.

dani, if you have an xp pro cd, you just put it in the drive and reboot. it should boot right into windows setup. but you'll lose everything. any non-windows apps will need to be reinstalled. that means office, roxio, antivirus --all that other stuff. you'll also have to have all of your mail and isp settings like pop3 and smtp server name, maybe host name and password depending on how you log in (tcp/ip or pppoe). then you'll need to spend several hours at windows update patching the fucking thing and more time reinstalling all the stuff you need. hopefully you have all the apps and stuff on a cd somewhere.

    good times.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 03:44 pm:

Hellllll no Dave. WAY to complicated for me. Why don't you and Agatha just buy a house by me and make my life so much easier?!?!

By Jim aka Pajama on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 03:47 pm:

Egads. Y'all should see some of the porn *I've* seen.

    *shudder*

Makes geriatric midgets fucking look like an episode of Teletubbies.

All I gotta say, is thank god for y'all techy people. Makes dumbfucks like me learn more.

Long time no see people. What's been happening? Nate still around this place?

Dani- as always, you're one funny, fierce rockin babe! How's that toaster oven? And how's Ally GayTor doin? Remember him?

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 04:00 pm:

Oh great....I see you got my e-mail Jimbabe!!!

    AllyGayTor!!! Doing just fine!!
Toaster Oven is wonderful as always!!!

    You totally made my day!!!

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 04:04 pm:

    I soooooo love you Jim...

Latest e-mail from tech support from Kazaa Plus:

    Dear user,

Thank you for contacting us at Kazaa Plus Customer Support.

Firstly please let me apologise for the inconvenience this may have
    caused to you.

Please be informed that, Kazaa Plus uses peer-to-peer technology. This
means that individual users connect to each other directly, without
need for a central point of management. This also means that there is no
central list of files being shared. Sharman Networks has no control
over the content shared by users of P2P software. The quality of the
video or audio files you have downloaded depends on the user who created
    the file.

However, please note that to discourage the sharing of bad files Kazaa
Plus includes a feature called 'Integrity Rating'. The 'Integrity
Rating' of a file is used to guide other users who may be interested in the
file. You are encouraged to rate the integrity of your files and delete
those which should not be shared.

The use of Integrity Ratings supports the spread of good quality,
accurately represented files. Every user is able to easily rate every file
they share based on its technical quality and accuracy the file's data
    (metadata).

Further, please note that Kazaa Plus does not include software to burn
files on to a CD-R. If you wish to backup your files on to a CD-R, you
must use a separate software program, as Kazaa
Plus is not designed for this purpose.

We would appreciate any additional comments or suggestions you may have
that would allow us to improve our service.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.

    Best regards,
    Kazaa Plus Customer Support.

By wisper on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 06:25 pm:

don't ask the Kazaa people for help, you gotta talk to the people who make the viewers you're using, and your computer, Kazza isn't the problem.

Like, if you bought a frozen pizza at the store, and the box was empty when you got home, you gotta call the pizza company and tell them.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 07:04 pm:

I go to all the help sections on all the players and I get no where.
The guy from the computer store says that I am missing a codec somewhere. I have downloaded every codec pack I can find and still no luck.
I hear you on the empty pizza box...but...if I bought that pizza at Publix grocery store and the box was empty, I would take my receipt to Publix and they would give me another pizza...if that pizza was made by Tombstone, Tombstone would tell me to take it to where I bought it...see?
That's why I figured Kazaa would have more answers because I paid them directly.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 07:55 pm:

I just downloaded this program called AllVideoConverter 1.3 and it's supposed to change AVI'S to MPEG's or other options....looks like a pretty decent program but it AINT fixing my problem of course.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 08:09 pm:

Just downloaded Quintessential Player 4.5......did not work either....fucker.

By dave. on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 08:18 pm:

yeah, you need to decode (codec) to convert.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 08:36 pm:

I just downloaded AVS VideoConverter 3.1 and it says it has 20 minutes left to convert the movie...being that I have no clue what the fuck I am doing, I don't know what I'm converting....I'll find out in a few minutes I guess.

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 08:58 pm:

    Ok, that didn't work either..next up...clueless.

By dave. on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 10:04 pm:

ok, control panel - sounds and audio devices - hardware - video codecs - properties - properties again. remove all the codecs.

control panel - add/remove programs. remove any divx, 3ivx, and xvid codecs. might as well remove all the players you just installed too.

reinstall only the latest divx codec.

    try to play the movie.

    reinstall the kazaa codec pack.

    try to play the movie.

if it still doesn't work, purchase a stick of dynamite and blow the piece of shit to kingdom come.

By dave. on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 10:10 pm:

also, before you reinstall, reboot. then exit out of any apps running in the background (the little icons down by the clock).

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 11:28 pm:

Everytime I go to remove a video codec under hardware , it tells me that if I remove it, your system may not work properly. Are you sure you want to remove it?

Should I say yes Dave and remove them all???

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 11:30 pm:

fuck it, I deleted them all..now I'm at the add/remove deleting all the shit you told me to...brb...

By Dani on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 11:33 pm:

    I'm going to reboot..brb

By dave. on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 11:46 pm:

    that's the spirit!!

    good luck.

By Dani on Saturday, May 1, 2004 - 12:03 am:

Ok, I rebooted...went outside to "take a moment" and I'm back...ok, so now I am supposed to go download Divx...the divx with the player right???

What Kazaa codec pack?? The k-lite codec pack? That's the one that comes with the G-spot thing and the 4 CC changer thing....right??

By Dani on Saturday, May 1, 2004 - 12:06 am:

I have plenty of spirit!! I rock right?? Fuck it, whats the worst thing that could possibly happen? Most of my time on the computer is usually spent downloading and burning movies and music...so if I can't have that, dynamite sounds awesome right now.

By Dani on Saturday, May 1, 2004 - 12:08 am:

    Reminds me of that song...if I can't have you...I don't want nobody baby..if I cant have you...uhhuuuhhuuu...
I just want to burn...like usual...something in my life has changed and I dont like change.

I have to shower tonight. Damn.

By dave. on Saturday, May 1, 2004 - 12:21 am:

yup. get divx, get the k-lite (i thought you said kazaa) thing. do it one at a time.

By Dani on Saturday, May 1, 2004 - 12:33 am:

Ok...shower is done...now on to downloading...

By Dani on Saturday, May 1, 2004 - 12:42 am:

downloaded divx...I'll try to play a movie on it...it will not play...I'll now go download the k-lite codec pack...Kazaa is just where I download shit Dave..you do mean I should download k-kite codec pack right?

By Dani on Saturday, May 1, 2004 - 12:46 am:

Was I supposed to delete QuickTime also??? Because I kinda did....................codec pack is downloading now....

By Dani on Saturday, May 1, 2004 - 12:53 am:

Fuck, it's telling me that I should uninstall all other existing codec related packages such as QuickTime...RealPlayer........I've already deleted QuickTime but I still have RealPlayer...so I should uninstall my RealPlayer AND my dix stuff????

By Dani on Saturday, May 1, 2004 - 12:55 am:

I'm not going any further until you answer that and your probably in bed sleeping with your family where I should be...

By dave. on Saturday, May 1, 2004 - 01:10 am:

do it!!! you can reinstall all that stuff later.

i home alone tonight. agatha's in portland and cleo's at a sleepover.

    and it's only 9pm here.

By Dani on Saturday, May 1, 2004 - 09:57 am:

Damn, I went to bed because it got late here...so you want me to DELETE the divx that I downloaded last night and just download the k-lite codec pack?? I'll go ahead and delete real player now...Kim was gone for the night too and Rich was asleep at 8...I should have waited up for you!!!
I'M GONNA DO IT!!!!!!!!!!! I'm just gonna be brave and do it....
Ok, RealPlayer is GONE...now I am gonna download the k-lite codec pack...and fuck it, I deleted divx again also because it said I should...

By Dani on Saturday, May 1, 2004 - 10:14 am:

Ok well........... after the codec pack installed, I got a message saying that I have low disk space...so it took me to disk cleanup and I completed that...now it just says that some QuickTime settings could not be found...I closed that screen...now I am at a Real Bandwidth setting screen which I know shit about so I am going to close that screen too..low disc space maybe from the 37 mother lovin' movies I've downloaded.that are like 350 megs a piece?!?!
Ok, the codec pack came with something called BS player....no movies will play on it...I'll try media player..
Ok, nothing will play in Media Player and the only other player in this thing is Winamap and that wont play either...
    Good fuckin' morning!!

By Dani on Saturday, May 1, 2004 - 10:34 am:

with the k-lite codec pack, under configuration there is options to set up Divx, RealPlayer, QuickTime, xvid, 3ivx, AC3, fix xvid decoder, MatrixMixer, xvidDecoding, xvidEncoding,...I know nothing about any of them....under tools there that g-spot, 4cc changer, bitrate calculator....know nothing about that either...the g-spot codec thing I used and when I put a movie in it, it like tells me what the movie contains as far as codecs...it says the movie has divx, 3ivx, xvid decoders...then when I hit render, it says DirectShow claims to be able to play the movie..the following comination of filters were used...AVI Splitter, DIVX decoder filter, video renderer...
It does say that 4 compatible codecs are installed but I'll be fucked if I can play a movie....

It's skimboarding day at the beach..I have to wake Kim up and get out of here...

By Dani on Saturday, May 1, 2004 - 05:19 pm:

DAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I AM PLAYING A FUCKING MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WAHOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO DAVE...YOU DA MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Dani on Saturday, May 1, 2004 - 05:22 pm:

Thank you Dave, by the way!

    YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!

I just got home from the beach and did a re-start and the movies now play...I dont know why or how but it must have been one of the things you told me to do...I KNEW you could do it...

    Your the Master, Dude!!!!!!!!!!!!

By wisper on Saturday, May 1, 2004 - 06:03 pm:

i just really expected this thread to end with Dani's computer setting on fire for some reason.

By Dani on Saturday, May 1, 2004 - 06:34 pm:

    So did I!!

Before I left for the beach this morning, I swear I was ready to throw this thing on the ground and jump on it a million times.

I am feeling soooooo much better now...I will actually sleep tonight!
It's like this huge weight has been lifted off my brain...

Tonight's movie lineup is Mean Girls...Kim wants to watch it...so we will...FROM MY OWN HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fuck the theater....

By agatha on Sunday, May 2, 2004 - 11:54 pm:

Cleo just saw that the other night, but at the theater with her friend. I'm glad Dave or some other karmic force was able to fix your problem. He is pretty handy about things like that.

By kazu on Monday, May 3, 2004 - 12:30 am:

My friend Yael really really really wants to see Mean Girls. And she really wants me to go. I don't know what to do. Even if it's good, it's still overflowing with teenagers, who give me hives.

By Dani on Monday, May 3, 2004 - 02:40 pm:

Kim thought Mean Girls was OK..nothing special but just OK...
Yup Agatha, Dave saved me...I would have never been able to figure it out on my own.

By V.v. on Monday, May 3, 2004 - 06:06 pm:

    dave is more than okay

but i have no idea what it has to do with considering the situation

    OUCH

By Pegg on Tuesday, May 4, 2004 - 09:20 pm:

I googled: "Naifiltr Device Driver" and you may be pleased to know this message board was #2. I know this is an old post so I don't know if my posting will get noticed.

This doesn't have to do with mediaplayer -- although I have it and Realplayer, but I haven't used it lately to watch anything. In my Event Viewer log for Systems, I have been noticing this warning message and wondered if anyone here has a solution: I run Windows XP home edition on a DELL (only 2 months old -- don't get me started with the problems I've had, and obviously a lot of you too)

6:35:38 SNMP Event Log Extension Agent is starting.

    Source EvntAgnt
    Category NONE
    Event ID 2018
    User N/A

    Then at 6:35:38
VirusScan McShield service started - scanning for 89769 viruses.
    Engine version : 4.3.20
    .DAT version : 4356

    EXTRA.DAT name : None

    Then at 6:38:45
VirusScan McShield service received an invalid filename from the NaiFiltr device driver.
    Received name = \GLOBAL??\TFSWIFS
    Process = IEXPLORE.EXE
    Source McLogEvent
    Category None

Computer slowed to a CRAWL -- nothing would respond. Wouldn’t even shut down. Held power button and shut down.

    7:54:57
Recovery was performed successfully on PropertyStore in catalog c:\system volume information\catalog.wci.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

VirusScan McShield service received an invalid filename from the NaiFiltr device driver.
    Received name = \GLOBAL??\TFSWIFS
    Process = explorer.exe

So, in this case the process was Explorer not IExplore (which I think follows when McShiled starts scanning. WHY is McSHIELD scanning every couple of hours? I never set it to do that (I have it set for once a week).

By heather on Tuesday, May 4, 2004 - 10:08 pm:

By Pegg on Tuesday, May 4, 2004 - 11:49 pm:

    Oh very sweet, thank you.

By dave. on Tuesday, May 4, 2004 - 11:59 pm:

pegg, is/are your scan engine/virus definitions all up to date? maybe uninstall and reinstall mcafee or go into the settings and disable autoscan. good luck.

i just really think mcafee is a stinker.

By Pegg on Wednesday, May 5, 2004 - 12:03 am:

Why thank you. Yes they are up to date and the McAfee tech support guy had me completely uninstall and reinstall. I'll look into other antivirus -- I didn't realize McAfee was so looked down on.

By dave. on Wednesday, May 5, 2004 - 12:19 am:

well, it's very popular for some reason. maybe they give it away to pc manufacturers or something.

By TBone on Wednesday, May 5, 2004 - 09:36 am:

I remember back when Mcaffee and MS Office used to have epic battles if they were both installed. The virus scanner would scan every file that got accessed, which would trigger Office's file indexer to index the file... which would trigger the virus scanner...

Both parties refused to fix it for a while, both claiming it was the other's problem.

Okay, I just read this ENTIRE thread. And now, thanks to Dani, that stupid song is running through my head....

    If I can't have you...I don't want nobody, babeh....If I can't have you...uhuuuuuhhh...

    Thanks. A LOT.

Anywhat, yeah, tried breaking my dell, because I saw what they did to it in that commercial- throwing it around, and dropping it from 10 feet, all that mess.... and it DID NOT BREAK. So, if you ever did get really, really, REALLY mad at your laptop, it's bewitched, and you wouldn't be able to break it anyway.

P.S. I want to know how to change my text to italics Dave. Please?

    OK, a few things.

    1) Downloading movies (I do it all the time) is getting something you should be paying for, and if you can convince yourself its not, then you are deluding yourself. At least have the sense to admit this. Each movie should be paid for, not just the downloader if you want to get technical about it

    2) If you want to watch a movie in the comfort of your own home, and not put up with theaters, well gosh, isnt that why they invented dvd's and video stores ? Put up with the delay ...

    3) paying for a download program ISNT playing for the movie itself ! btw use E-donkey, much better, free and no spyware ...

    4) When any movie seems to be playing in WHATEVER player, and the sound is heard, but no picture, its usualy because the default video device is not set to the monitor. This happens sometimes is you have a video-out port on your laptop/pc. The video stream cannot display on two screens at once, so only the sound goes to the secondary screen. So the soultion is to go into your video properties, Control Panel ? Display options > settings > advanced and set somewhere in there (depending on your video card brand) to make the PC monitor the primary display device. ( Or visa versa if you want to watch movies on the TV).

    Cheers.

BTW : The k-lite codec pack is the best and will play %99.9 of movies on the net today.
    3)
