Forgot to add that under the "Enjoy!" at the bottom of the webpage above is an applet that takes a few seconds to load 39. You can type in your message and hear it in code.

Thanks M, that is one boss downloadable program. Are you a ham radio operator?

By Dougie on Tuesday, April 17, 2001 - 06:09 pm:

Do they still require a morse code test to become a ham operator? Seems kind of antiquated.

By Gunther on Wednesday, April 18, 2001 - 08:37 pm:

"Slow, but cute. Morse is becoming a bit of an anachronism - they've dropped it, I seem to recall, from the Ham Radio exam, because so many people were leaving the field because they hated Morse Code. Still, we have to hope there's no world-ending cataclysm, where we'd all wish we had a simple code to communicate with, when the telephone and radio systems are destroyed. Oh, well. Too much sci-fi."

Five words per minute. They did away with the advanced and the novice licence but if you already have the licence you can get it renewed indefinitely.
Five words a minute (of Morse code) for the general and the extra class licence. With the extra you get all amateur privieleges, any ham band. With the general you have a little more than of the phone bands on 80 meters, 40, 20 and 15.

    licenses and privileges

By Dougie on Thursday, April 19, 2001 - 07:30 pm:

I'm thinking of getting the code-free license. My buddy's a ham operator and he's got some old equipment he's going to set me up with.

you know,...morse is still the best way to communicate under adverse conditions. when nothing else can get through, morse does.

Maritime vessels still transmit this code using spotlamps, if no other means of communication are possible. Right on Joe.

By Dougie on Friday, April 20, 2001 - 05:58 pm:

How about semaphores? Do they still use those?

By Nate on Friday, April 20, 2001 - 06:06 pm:

they use them in computing! yessiriesdougie!

By Friend of K5KY on Friday, April 20, 2001 - 06:12 pm:

Joe, are you 28? I believe that's what your message translates to.

By Dougie on Friday, April 20, 2001 - 06:14 pm:

Yeah, each processor comes with hundreds of those tiny little Blue Man Group guys waving flags at each other: "Sorry dude, I'm busy. You'll have to wait." "OK, coast is clear, you may proceed."

Morse Code is great an all, but it just doesn't
cut it when you're in bed.

    "C'mon, baby! Put my ..-- -..- ...- --.. and do
    that thing with your -.--. ..-- ..--- -..-!"
