Am almost ifinished with this revealing self disclosure of the artist himself. fascinatingly frank, and self centered, but aren't most autobiographies? Certainly Dali was an egomanical creative, but the book is so full of his pathos and his frivolity, his play with images and words, and extraodinarily long sentences...it is a good read.

Even if you don't like his painting. Did you know he also did cinema at the beginning of its history? He was quite the dashing fellow indeed.

you mean salvador dali? was part of his secret life pretending to be italian?

i've always thought dali's paintings looked too much like high-end comic book art. but i'll bet his autobiography is a fascinating read. i knew he did cinema, or i knew he had worked with bunuel and i've seen the razor cutting an eyeball clip a few times.

years ago a friend who works at an art museum gave me biography of the 20th-century painter francis bacon. i never finished it. i'm bad that way. but i do remember being fascinated with the art. it was far more disturbing to me than anything dali did. i think i have that book around somewhere.

yep, I don't know Bacon's art at all. Dali is disturbing and entertaining at the same time. Some poeple are repulsed by it, but actually with reading his life story, some of it makes sense of a madman's consciousness.

He spent a lot of time in Spain and Paris, and I think he was nuts. But even nuttier was his woman to stay with him through all his exploits.

am listening to mstislav rostropovich play bach's cello suites. that and some wine helps my digestion for dinner. there's a line drawing of a cello player on the cover of my cd. i have never bothered to check who the artist is, but this evening i did. it was dali.

three studies for figures at the base of a crucifixion by francis bacon.

interesting link. I think what i like about Dali is the repetitive sublimity of his figures, whereas the Bacon three studies has some shock value but little visual interest. There is always so very much going on in anything Dali sketched--or wrote for that matter--the most of which is missed at first sigthing or reading. Thanks for posting the link, though. I will look further into Bacon.
