    Since I first heard it many years ago, I thought this must be one of the saddest songs ever written, in its twisted little way. A song that could bring not just a tear but a whole afternoon's worth of morbid reverie. Far above its sister song, Eleanor Rigby (and wonder which was written first?).

    I had kind of avoided listening to it lately since my own situation started to veer towards Emily's, but the other day I was in a bookstore and the Zombies compilation was playing in the background. I realized after a minute or 2 that I had to walk around some or I was going to be standing there dripping tears and laughing at the same time.

    Now this song has popped into my mind unbidden. I think it's because of cramps. There's the word "pain" in the song, and I believe this is a phenomenon (a song pops up on your mental radio for no reason and later you realize it's because of a word or phrase that echos some thought you were having...)

    Does the song have anything to do with "A Rose for Emily" by, uh.

    shit.

    Faulkner! Yeah. Does the song have anything to do with "A Rose for Emily" by Faulkner?

    Hmmm. I just read the story. I don't think so but will have to listen to the song again now. I think it lacks the macabre element...

    I had a high school english teacher who gave us the most depressing reading assignments. A Rose for Emily was one of them. I think it was this story that made me see her as a true romantic. We would read poems like "Provide, Provide" by Frost (one of my favorites), and The Lovesong of J. Alfred Proofrock, as well as stories by Eunesco. Believe it or not, I kept all the notes from this class, and feel to this day that this teacher was perhaps the most inspirational I ever had. She was something of a fading beauty, would wear her hair in a bun and wore schoolmarmish oufits. I sincerely doubt that even a single one of my fellow classmates "got it". I learned from her that romanticism isn't just roses, but dust and forelorness as well. Great story by the way..Can't say about the song. Don't think I've heard it.

    I don't think the song and the story really have much in common...

    I found the lyrics here

    Too bad. The story is excellent.

    Romanticism != romance.
