failing iraq

sorabji.com: The Stalking Post: failing iraq
THIS IS A READ-ONLY ARCHIVE FROM THE SORABJI.COM MESSAGE BOARDS (1995-2016).

By Nate on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 02:26 pm:

our mission in iraq is being undermined by our own military. not at any high level, but towards the bottom. our enlisted men are rampaging like frat boys in a lawless land.

iraqi civilians are being beaten for sport. iraqis stand by the side of the road to sell dinar and AK-47 bayonettes and bootleg whiskey to american soldiers. american soliders regularly mug these people for their wares.

i am told a story of a ten year old iraqi boy who had a stack of dinar swiped from his hands. crying, frantic, the boy screams at the solider, explaining that for the to return without dinar or payment will result in the boy being branded a theif and his hand being chopped off. a ten year old boy, and the solider just laughed and fanned himself with the stack of bills.

i am shocked. i am told this is common place.

i am told that the night before returning to the states a sargent took a group of soliders out. they came up on a man selling bayonettes and hit him hard in the back of his head. he fell to the ground and they stole what he had Then the driver proceeded to run him over, throw the truck into reverse, and run him over again.

i am very disappointed. we have a huge opportunity to do something good here, in iraq, and our own soliders are acting against the plans of our government.

By J on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 02:47 pm:

If this is true who do we need to contact about this matter? How do we protest? That would maybe explain why the people there are killing our soldiers. If this is true something needs to be done about it now.

By Nate on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 03:04 pm:

It is heresey from me, but it wasn't from the man who told me the stories. I trust him and, regardless, see no motive for him to lie.

I don't know how to raise this. The anti-bush people will eat it up, and the pro-bush people will assume it is liberal lies. The truth doesn't seem to matter.

By patrick on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 03:20 pm:

    no one should be surprised.

when has in invading force of 20 somethings equipped with some of the most sophiticated equipment in the world expected to behave?

we raped in piliged in Vietnam.

further, for many soldiers, its quite easy to scapegoat Iraqis as perpetrators of 9/11. I've read countless stories of soldiers, citing a photo of the trade center, or pentagon they keep above their bunk as encouragement to go out and patrol the streets of baghdad.

I even read a story in which the soldier said "its their turn now", referring to the Iraqi populus and suffering a blow like we did on 9/11.

i mean really...is ANYONE surprised by this?

Yeah, its absurd and disgraceful...the lack of professionalism, but what do you expect?

By semillama on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 03:47 pm:

Come on now. These guys are all heroes and would never in a million years behave in any mannner that would tarnish the image of our fair country. Yo Joe!

By Nate on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 03:48 pm:

i guess i expected some level of honor. or, at least, in absence of honor, humanity.

where is the leadership? isn't command and control the edict of the military? isn't everone answerable to someone else straight up the chain? don't the generals care that their privates are undermining the effort? that france will give us a smug "we told you so" when we fail, not because our mission was invalid but because our miltary is incompetent?

i was surprised. the leadership should be there. i'm not surprised that this could happen, i am surprised that it is widespread. "common place."

    and hugely disappointed.

all it would take is some serious media coverage and the miltary would clean itself up.

By patrick on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 03:49 pm:

    you need a job right?

By semillama on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 04:26 pm:

I had a high school friend who joined the Navy, and apparently he and his buddies liked to gang up and beat the crap out of homosexual men while on shore leave in San Fran. Real heroes there. Suffice to say, I don't consider myself his friend anymore.

By Antigone on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 05:02 pm:

WHere's spunky's comment? Is he AWOL?

By Antigone on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 05:18 pm:

This is a major reason why we need an international force.

"isn't command and control the edict of the military?"

Yes, but it is superseded by loyalty to your fellow soldiers. Thus, it's easy to turn a blind eye.

By heather on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 05:21 pm:

and i got flack for saying they just wanted to go
home to drink beer and sit by the pool

is this supposed to raise my opinion of those
    in the military?

By semillama on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 05:28 pm:

There are a lot of good folks in the military. You can't judge them all by the actions of a few. Just like anywhere else, there are a lot of good, honest folks in the military, and there are crazy evil motherfuckers out for revenge.

By heather on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 05:46 pm:

    of course :)

but that just takes me back to my implied point
that maybe the military shouldn't be accepting
as many [most] of the candidates they see,
give them a few weeks of training and
    potentially hand them guns.

By Rowlf on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 06:01 pm:

I'm sure some soldiers do bad things, but I think if Rummy had kept a better ratio of troops to population, they'd realize they have a better chance and do better because they know they will do better. I bet theres a feeling that their mission is doomed and so they dont try... like a ball club in September 25 games away from the wild card slot

And I bet there would be more coverage of the military, however 1) when ABC interviewed troops and found out they werent happy, a smear campaign was put against the reporter, 2) several recent surveys and research shows over 70% of Americans want "fiercely pro-American news coverage", which means its bad for business. Journalism in America more and more is failed by capitalism, which is unfortunate because most other places have found away for the two to work in harmony.

By Antigone on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 06:44 pm:

Agreed. But the good honest folks can be pushed to make evil actions by many factors:

    1) Fatigue and frustration
    2) Facing a hostile population
    3) Opportunity to act without consequences
    4) Being around others who instigate evil actions

Seems all four conditions are ripe. 1 is being exasperated now by stretching our military too thin. 2 is more or less out of our control. 3 is caused by the good ol' boy network that is inherant in the military. 4 will always be there, because there are always crazy, violent folks wherever you go.

By dave. on Saturday, July 26, 2003 - 03:13 am:

i'm just not surprised. the major problem facing a society seeking peace is, and has always been, "what do we do with the young men?"

we send them to fight wars. biologically, 90% (my own estimate) of men are unnecessary, yet they (we) all have that conqueror gene.

the answer: thousands of years of hell or a biter test, much like we can do with dogs, where aggressive subjects are snuffed. their genes won't propagate and the more docile males will reproduce. how fucked is that?

i tell ya, our days on this mudball are limited.

    good times!

By Ronda on Saturday, July 26, 2003 - 05:11 pm:

100% of all men are necessary

97-98% of man is unnecessarily displaced functionally

fact: only 2-3% of our DNA make-up, or master program, are called genes, which science does have considerable though limited knowledge of,while the function and purpose of the remainimg 97-98% is hardly known.

theory: we cannot know for certain the effects of aggressive genes, as they may cause free-radicals in the molecular structuring of the brains cells of our off-spring, which can cause unknown diseases for which there is no defense.

in other words, men are the reasons that we have wars in the first place.

    aggression is an unnecessary evil.

    we need strong males.

rechannel that conqueror gene gentlemen, and over come your hostile aggressions.

By Antiogone on Saturday, July 26, 2003 - 07:37 pm:

"we cannot know for certain the effects of
    aggressive genes"

    Ah, quit yer pseudo-scientific gene
    anthropomorphizing bullshit.

By Ronda on Saturday, July 26, 2003 - 08:55 pm:

there's one side effect - animosity

By Ronda on Saturday, July 26, 2003 - 10:12 pm:

    how about testosterone, dave?

    anthropomorphizing bullshit?

I hope you're face is in front of a big fan blowing on high speed...

    with your mouth wide open

By dave. on Saturday, July 26, 2003 - 10:37 pm:

i hear ya, ronda. it's all ugly.

take me to the promised land, ronda.

By Ronda on Saturday, July 26, 2003 - 10:40 pm:

    "free-radicals in the molecular structuring..."

    that's the BULLSHIT.

By Ronda on Saturday, July 26, 2003 - 10:55 pm:

there is no promised land sweet-heart

its all bad, and we have eve to blame

    ask your self this:

would you have been beguiled by that slithering, slime-covered, ass-munching, belly-crawling, low life of a serpent?

By dave. on Saturday, July 26, 2003 - 11:27 pm:

well, assuming i believed the adam and eve story to be an historical fact, hell yeah! i'd have eaten enough apple to shit fritters throughout the remainder of the growing season.

alas, i can't, with a straight face, pin the tail of the downfall of man on the donkey of an apple binge.

if you can, i'd love to hear your testimony.

By Ronda on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 12:00 am:

then your answer is, no, you would not have been beguiled.

alas, can you, with a straight face, pin the tail of the downfall of the garden of eden on the ass of a man?

if you can't, I'd love to hear your excuse.

By dave. on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 12:10 am:

not until you testify, ms. evasive.

By Ronda on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 12:37 am:

    then your answer is yes.

By dave. on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 12:39 am:

if you wish, ms. nice try.

By Ronda on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 12:52 am:

    what testimony?

    what nice try?

By dave. on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 12:58 am:

By Ronda on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 01:04 am:

By dave. on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 01:22 am:

what the hell does he want with you?

    seriously.

By Ronda on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 01:29 am:

By Echo on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 01:34 am:

    dave, you're so funny

By dave. on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 01:37 am:

likewise, i'm gettin bored. howzabout you send in your henchmen. i actually like "thr" passive-aggressive allegory. maybe because i'm an armchair geology/anthropology geek.

    i dare ya, ms. brat.

By dave. on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 01:41 am:

    hah! i laugh, ms. on-the-defensive.

By Ronda on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 02:08 am:

I was beguiled, and thought that you were cumming on to me. steamy

the apple bit was kind of erotic...yummy

    until you got defensive.

I actually wanted to know what you look like, for a split second

    are you strong, dave?

I wanted, for a fraction of a micro-second, to bear your child.

I had to turn-up the air and take off my...and let down my blonde hair

but then I thought of the island whores...

the henchmen bore me tonite, dave. I'm going to wake up panther instead...

    another day, geek.

By dave. on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 02:23 am:

    of course.

By Ronda on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 02:29 am:

    of course?

By dave. on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 02:34 am:

go wake him up. stop wasting time asking stupid questions.

By Panther on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 02:56 am:

dave, I understand that you want to have an apple talk with me...

now, are we talking computers, here?

By Panther on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 03:05 am:

ronda woke me up and said that it was urgent.
    something about apples...

computer talk I presume, well let me tell you a thing or two geek...

what in the hell is so damn important at 2:15 am?

By dave. on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 03:11 am:

as fun as it would be to lead you on, i'll level with ya. your understanding is flat wrong. you should be fucking ronda but if you want to talk computers, i got nothing better to do right now.

    what's on your mind?

By Ronda on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 03:19 am:

you're not as much fun as you used to be, dave.

    you've become shallow.

    sleep well.

By dave. on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 03:21 am:

By agatha on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 03:35 pm:

i am 21 year old whore from the island of macronesia...

and was sold by my people to the Bush people for 200 barrels of crude oil, then shipped to your country, with the political agreement that, i am to have non-sexual, physical contact with the democrate, only

my father was promised my immunity from all STDs

but, i am allergic to tobacco...no cigars please

i hunger to bite the apple

By dave. on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 11:55 pm:

y'ever own a macaw, ronda? beautiful birds and great fun. they sit there in their cage and shriek, at no one in particular, words they know or hear in a tone that is the opposite of soothing. macaw owners all agree that it's not unusual, after one of these outbursts, to feel like the bird was actually mocking them directly. mostly, you admire their ability to speak clearly with their bird brains, odd little tongues and hooked beak. the rest of the time, you admire your ability to refrain once again from wringing their neck.

By Ronda on Monday, July 28, 2003 - 05:28 am:

    no, dave.

I admire birds, but experience has taught me that its their droppings that annoy me...

I own a yorkie. he's an independent little fellow.

not only does he have a mind of his own, he's house broken.

should you care to accurately read between the lines of my nonsense posts, you'll find that there is only sheer humor to be found...

possibly in the 80's these issues to which you refer, and that I've poked fun at, generated or were the product of anger from women who wanted liberated from not having been happy people to begin with.

I was young and carefree and didn't identify with the 80's lib thing...I didn't see these topics played out in my parents home as a child either...

men tend to get ridiculed or blamed too much for things

its lame to the point of being totally funny.

After a solid five minutes of scritchity-scritch, I noticed a slow burn. I turned on the table lamp to check things out, and found that my cock had swelled about 2.3 times in size. This was much bigger than any erection I could/can achieve. I decided things were not so bad. I swam in the ocean the next day and the salty water cleared up the rash.

personally, i don't care if you poke at and passive-aggressively harass anybody anymore. you shot your wad on day one.

so either show me why i, or anyone here, should give you any further attention (a.k.a respect, i know you have something to offer -- offer it!) or go ahead and flip this post back at me ronda-style, continue to be a gadfly and i'll contact your isp. i have all the info i need. it remains to be seen if i have the gumption to do such a detestable thing. i have never been a tattler and i find such people despicable and without honor.

i actually identify with you on a lot of levels. i go into irc channels and get almost immediately kicked because the people in the room aren't into my flavor of discourse. they find me antagonistic and aloof. they want me to talk about stupid, lowbrow shit with them. they feel like i'm picking on them when i have nothing but neighborly camaraderie in mind. basically, i and they are oil and vinegar and no one cares to crack an egg, mix it up and make a hero sandwich.

c'mon. tell us about yourself. give us some background.

"oh? what? why are you being so harsh with
me? i was only trying to be friends" and then
go off and pout expecting you to go after them
and start it all over again.

"i happened, by chance to stumble onto this site, and i don't even remember what i was looking for."

This is sorabji code for "I'm now addicted and will post for the remainder of my natural life."

    We've all said it.

"i'm finding it hard to believe that anyone might have felt offended or harassed by my posts when i consider the language and style that is used by others, not to mention the visuals."

It's because you're an outsider. Most humans are strange in that way.

Are you saying she offended us because we're not used to her? I thought it was because she never responded directly to any questions and was hostile without provocation.

    Cretinous bitch.

I think Tiggy was talking about ronda/panther/tard. For some reason I thought ronda might have been that girl who posted here about all the hot sex she was getting then said you can't get to heaven if your gay.

I was throwing out an insult that might be overlooked (as an over-the-top utternace) from a friend, but taken offensive from a stranger.

By Spider on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 - 04:47 pm:

Oh. Well, I was just confused...I guess that makes me an acquaintance?

By Antigone on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 - 04:50 pm:

Rhi, if I met you on the street I'd call you "bubba."

    That means you're a friend. :)

By Spider on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 - 05:03 pm:

    Aw, now, "bubba" I like.

i'd just like to point out that my housemate got one of the new 'Matrix' Tod McFarlane series action figures, on his desk, and it's Neo in a scene from the first one where they shoot up the lobby. He comes with a little setup of the floor and wall and a pillar that's been shot up with bullets, and he's in mid-flip, so the toy just balances there upside down and his coat is in motion and he's pointing a gun.

it's the most amazing action figure i've seen.

Tod lives less than 10 miles away from me,Whisper come on down!
