i love this quote: ``A lot of people live in a continuous balance of terror with their computers,''

the battles between microsoft and the junta of big companies who are not quite as big gets funnier and funnier.

for this i say right on microsoft.

It's just Microsoft throwing a temper tantrum. "If we can't bundle IE with our OSses, then we
don't have to support Java." Sun's got no worries, they'll just write a VM for XP and
distribute it for free. Java isn't going away. Speaking of free Sun software, I tried
downloading Solaris 8 for Intel at work today and it crapped out multiple times. 3 downloads
totalling 800+ MB. I left another download running at work, hopefully it'll come through. Anybody else got it yet? Their StarOffice is pretty cool, got it running on
    a linux box at work.

By Nate on Thursday, July 19, 2001 - 07:26 pm:

i don't think it's just microsoft throwing a tantrum. sun does have worries, stated in the article: a lot of people are afraid of downloading and installing shit.

    microsoft is positioning .NET.

By dave. on Thursday, July 19, 2001 - 08:57 pm:

i downloaded it for my ultrasparc. 3 cds. they throttle their transfer rates. solaris is a stupid os but they say if you know it, you can make long dollars. i'm looking for the 64bit eprom upgrade image whackydoodle jobby. help?

By Antigone on Thursday, July 19, 2001 - 09:21 pm:

Actually, I think MS not bundling Java with XP is a good thing. It'll force users to get the most recent version of Java, which is leaps and bounds better than the VM that's in IE.

Regardless, the future of Java isn't on the desktop.

"the battles between microsoft and the junta of big companies who are not quite as big gets funnier and funnier."

What I find funny is that you're characterizing MS as an oppressed minority.

By Nate on Thursday, July 19, 2001 - 09:25 pm:

not at all. i really don't take sides.

i think microsoft does take a lot of undue hits because of it's size. it also has plenty of power and is in no way oppressed.

the VM that's in IE is outdated because of Sun's suit. microsoft can't bundle the latest VM.

By Nate on Thursday, July 19, 2001 - 09:26 pm:

"Regardless, the future of Java isn't on the desktop."

argueably, neither is the future of personal computing.

"the VM that's in IE is outdated because of Sun's suit. microsoft can't bundle the latest VM."

Thank goodness for that. They never got the chance to "embrace and extend." I like their current strategy with C#: rename and claim.

By Nate on Thursday, July 19, 2001 - 10:05 pm:

they did embrace and extend. and the java interface to the COM SCM and vice versa was decent tech.

By dave. on Thursday, July 19, 2001 - 11:35 pm:

hal, if you want to try a very usable and very under-appreciated os, try qnx.

be is also pretty cool but mostly dead. i have the pro version if you're interested.

By dave. on Thursday, July 19, 2001 - 11:36 pm:

ach, i mistook dougie for hal. nevertheless. . .
