So I was traveling this weekend and my father had
    a heart attack.

And no one bothered to call me until after he'd
already been airlifted, and had surgery, and was
lying alone in an ICU on a ventilator. And now I'm
back in California waiting for word--I still
haven't been able to see him because he's been
sedated and there's nothing functional I can do
other than sitting here, periodically calling the
ICU for updates, talking to nurses who vary from
super friendly and nice to kind of icy, wondering,
    waiting.

He always hated and feared doctors and probably
had problems before but didn't do anything about
it until the pain got so bad he finally gave in. I
think he didn't want to be a bother, that's why he
didn't have anyone call me, but I still feel...I
don't know. I'm so tired and out of it that I
don't even know what my feelings are.

I feel weird, I guess. I don't know what comes
    next.

Do we, I mean, does one, I mean, I don't understand
    families.

By sarah on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 - 05:04 pm:

if i were you, i'd go the hospital and visit your
dad. even if he's sedated, he'll know you're
    there, and that matters.

now probably isn't a great time to be speculating
about why you weren't called. speculate, or if it
    still matters, ask, later.

Oh Platy, I'm thinking of you.

    Families are hard.

By Antigone on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 - 08:49 pm:

Seconding sarah's suggestion. Head to the hospital and be at
his side. Talk to him. Conscious or no it will help him and you.

By droopy on Friday, October 19, 2012 - 03:03 am:

    so sorry, platypus.

By platypus on Friday, October 19, 2012 - 02:05 pm:

Sarah, your steel-trap memory never ceases to amaze
me. I still don't really understand families and
    their drama.

Thanks for all the good wishes, y'all. I was finally
allowed into ICU for a bit on Weds when he was
extubated and talked to him on the phone last night.
He's actually doing really well, all things
    considered.

By Spider on Friday, October 19, 2012 - 05:05 pm:

My pops is in cardiac telemetry now and might be

    long road, though.
