By Dougie on Thursday, October 12, 2000 - 11:17 am:

That part where after singing very dejectedly, and after the Kate Bush interludes, he majestically and resolutely proclaims:

"Got to walk out of here
    I can't take any more
Going to stand on that bridge
    Keep my eyes down below
    Whatever may come
    And whatever may go
    That river's flowing
    That river's flowing"

By Margret on Thursday, October 12, 2000 - 12:09 pm:

    I love that song.
I really love the starkness, after the carefully layered sound of the rest of the song, of the end of Mercy Street:

Anne, with her father, is out in the boat.
    Riding the water.
    Riding the waves
    of the sea.

By Dougie on Thursday, October 12, 2000 - 12:30 pm:

Yeah, I love Mercy Street too...especially the line when he says,
    "Dreaming of the tenderness
    The tremble in the hips,
    of kissing Mary's lips"

And the way he enunciates the word shocks:

"Confessing all the secret things in the warm velvet box to the priest
    He's the doctor
    He can handle the shocks..."

Peter Gabriel has one of the most emotinal voices in rock. I find it Ironic that he used to front Genesis, when they were actually great. Last Temptation of Christ is an amazing piece of music as well.

By Dougie on Friday, October 13, 2000 - 03:16 pm:

Yeah, I'd have to say my favorite of all time of Peter Gabriel is Solsbury Hill, well-cranked, where you actually "feel your heart going boom boom boom."

Right now, I've got Avalon by Roxy Music going through my head. Nice tune, but I wish it would go away.

By Margret on Monday, October 16, 2000 - 11:42 am:

Hmm. I have different Gabriel needs at different times, but I think maybe the tightest two for my tastes are: I Have the Touch and Lay Your Hands On Me. If I had to pick one of 'em, I'd go for I have the touch. But, y'know, I'm awfully susceptible to the seduction of turning out the lights and laying on the couch and listening to the whole "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" album when I'm very occasionally home alone.

    I Have the Touch

The time I like is the rush hour, cos I like the rush
The pushing of the people - I like it all so much
Such a mass of motion - do not know where it goes
I move with the movement and ... I have the touch

I'm waiting for ignition, I'm looking for a spark
Any chance collision and I light up in the dark
There you stand before me, all that fur and all that hair
Oh, do I dare ... I have the touch

    Wanting contact
    I'm wanting contact
    I'm wanting contact with you
Shake those hands, shake those hands
Give me the thing I understand
Shake those hands, shake those hands
Shake those hands, shake those hands

Any social occasion, it's hello, how do you do
All those introductions, I never miss my cue
So before a question, so before a doubt
My hand moves out and ... I have the touch

    Wanting contact
    I'm wanting contact
    I'm wanting contact with you
Shake those hands, shake those hands
Give me the thing I understand
Shake those hands, shake those hands

    Lay Your Hands on Me

Sat in the corner of the Garden Grill, with plastic flowers
    on the window sil
No more miracles, loaves and fished, been so busy with the
    washing of the dishes
Reaction level's much too high - I can do without the stimuli
I'm living way beyong my ways and means, living in the zone
    of the inbetweens
I can see the flashes on the frozen ocean, static charge of
    the cold emotion
Watched on by the distant eyes - watched on by the silent
    hidden spies

But still the warmth flows through me
And I sense you know me well
    No luck, no golden chances
    No mitigating circumstances now
    It's only common sense
There are no accidents around here

I am willing - lay your hands on me
I am ready - lay your hands on me
I believe - lay your hands on me, over me

Working in gardens, thornless roses, fat men play with their
    garden hoses
Poolside laughter has a cynical bite, sausage speared by the
    cocktail satellite
I walk away from from light and sound, down stairways leading
    underground

But still the warmth flows through me
And I sense you know me well
    It's only common sense
There are no accidents around here

I am willing - lay your hands on me
I am ready - lay your hands on me
I believe - lay your hands on me, over me
    over me

    Lay your hands on me
    Lay your hands on me
Lay your hands on me, over me

i'm having a bit of a fit over gabriel's first solo record lately.

i took the old track; don't get me wrong; i ride tandem with the random; i'm waiting for the big one; i-will-find-out; modern love can be a strain; i want to be alone; i don't need a replacement; you guys are crazy!

right you are, jack. by the way, daryl hall's "sacred songs" is also pretty damned good - although not all of the pieces work.

I am probably risking the wrath of everyone here, but.... have any of you heard the cover of "Don't Give Up," by Willie Nelson and Sinead O'Connor?

It's pretty damned awesome in my humblest of opinions.

Ok my dial-up won't let me watch that at home so I'll watch it at work tomorrow. Not the video I've seen before so I'll be anxious to see it.

By dave. on Tuesday, July 18, 2006 - 11:44 pm:

    there's another video?

it's mostly about the song. the video is, i don't know, it's ok.

fuck kinky. willie should run for governor of texas.

By dave. on Tuesday, July 18, 2006 - 11:45 pm:

and dude. dial up? come on now.

By Jim aka Pajama on Tuesday, July 18, 2006 - 11:51 pm:

yeah, the original video is very campy and begins with Willie sitting next to Burt Reynolds (I Swear this is true) who is directing the video and you see dancing cowboys with tight jeans and tighter butts. It's great fun. The link you posted looks more seriuos but that's what is great about the song. GOVERNOR? Let Kinky have it. We need Willie as President -- someone who clearly inhales. :)

And, yes dial-up. I know. It's on my list. I have to. My nearly 90-year old Grandmother even has high-speed.

    *hangs head*
