Slammin slammin track. Oddly enough it is a frequent tune played on the Eagle's juke box.

The Eagle, mind you, is a gay leather bar in Washington, D.C.

Heard it last night and cannot escape it.

Comparisons to the many Irish versions I heard as a child are not to be found!

By Lizzard King on Thursday, May 24, 2001 - 12:55 pm:

    Metallica killed Napster damnit!

Don't get me wrong, Metallica black was the first CD I ever purchased, and I love their music, but I refuse to listen to them, and I will not ever again buy any of their music.

They are all millionaires, and yet they whine that some people want to check out their music without getting all the other schlock songs that accompany just about every CD released today.

Napster was a great thing. Now it is ruined in deference to some whiner millionaire rock stars.

    Thanks Lars.

By J on Thursday, May 24, 2001 - 01:25 pm:

    I couldn't agree more.

By dave. on Thursday, May 24, 2001 - 03:21 pm:

    the pogues' version is better.

By wisper on Thursday, May 24, 2001 - 03:51 pm:

one of my housemates has a cd of classic irish drinking songs that he likes to blast late at night....
...on second thought, i'd rather not talk about it.

By Jim aka Pajama on Thursday, May 24, 2001 - 03:52 pm:

nevermind that Napster violated every basic copyright law there is. how is it different than the bootleg movies folks film in movie theaters and sell to poor dumb schmucks on the street?

By cyst on Thursday, May 24, 2001 - 03:52 pm:

the other night I wanted to hear a madonna song so bad that I tried to figure out gnutella, but there was just one line there ("it's ok, really"?) and a hit counter.

I want to hear "don't tell me." not enough to buy it, but enough to mourn for napster.

By Nate on Thursday, May 24, 2001 - 03:58 pm:

    www.audiogalaxy.com

napster violated nothing. it's the people who use napster who are committing the crimes.

napster is no different than a phonebook sells ad space to massage parlors that occassionaly stroke a cock. or escort services who everyone knows often stroke a cock.

By J on Thursday, May 24, 2001 - 04:02 pm:

Speaking of the Pogues, did anyone see Elvis Costello on Third Rock from the Sun last night?

By Lizzard King on Thursday, May 24, 2001 - 05:18 pm:

    Laws schmaws.

Napster was a great thing for music. It gave me a chance to check out some stuff that I wouldn't have bought straight up because I didn't know enough about the groups and/or entire genres. I could listen to a wide variety of stuff, and see what I liked. I went out and bought a number of CDs purely because of Napster. The service allows consumers to test drive before they buy.

Bad musicians fear having consumers hear their stuff before they buy it. If Metallica had concentrated on their music rather than their checkbooks, they would have been helped by Napster. Now they are destined to join Poison, Whitesnake, Motley Crue and Winger as bands whose time has passed.

By Spanky VonRobber on Thursday, May 24, 2001 - 05:23 pm:

FUCK YOU MAN. POISON ROCKS. WHITESNAKE ROCKS. CRUE ROCKS. WINGER FUCKING ROCKS.

WHY DON'T YOU TAKE YOUR FUCKING PHIL COLLINS RECORDS AND GO PLAY WITH YOUR DOLLS, WUSSY.

By Fetidbeaver on Friday, May 25, 2001 - 02:03 am:

Does this mean I can get my cock stroked at Napster?

By Jada on Friday, May 25, 2001 - 07:52 am:

Day after day, my love turns gray, like the skin on a dying man. And night after night, we pretend it's alright, but i have grown older and you have grown colder and nothing is very much fun anymore. I feel one of my toes coming off. I feel cold as a razor blade, tight as a tourniquet, dry as a funeral drum.

By Jada on Friday, May 25, 2001 - 07:55 am:

Guess what i'm listening to right now. Whiskey in the jar. It's on 89.5 WSOU .

By Jim aka Pajama on Friday, May 25, 2001 - 08:06 am:

    YOU JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND.
    YOU JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND.

By Dougie on Friday, May 25, 2001 - 09:36 am:

No, I do understand. I understand that Roger Waters' lyrics don't need any improving on by you.

By M on Friday, May 25, 2001 - 09:41 am:

didn't the grateful dead cover whiskey in the jar - o?

i don't get the toe bit either.

By JD on Friday, May 25, 2001 - 11:49 am:

By DS on Friday, May 25, 2001 - 11:58 am:

By semillama on Saturday, May 26, 2001 - 03:13 pm:

By BLEEDER on Saturday, May 26, 2001 - 11:45 pm:

By Your Mom on Sunday, May 27, 2001 - 01:41 pm:

NAPSTER IS FOR COCK LOVERS. THANK YOU.

By Nate on Sunday, May 27, 2001 - 07:54 pm:

    well.

    i love my cock.

    don't use napster, but whatever.

    who doesn't love cock?

    lesbians, i guess.

a small portion of the population.

but still, are you saying napster isn't for lesbians?

i think the lesbian community would be shocked by your discriminatory tone.

By TONY on Sunday, May 27, 2001 - 11:18 pm:

WHAT'S WITH THE FUCKED-UP LOWERCASE SHIT?

By NATE on Monday, May 28, 2001 - 02:26 am:

By agatha on Monday, May 28, 2001 - 11:35 am:

q: what do state workers and lesbians have in common?

    a: they don't do dick.

By semillama on Monday, May 28, 2001 - 12:17 pm:

    Hee! I laugh.

By Jim aka Pajama on Wednesday, May 30, 2001 - 11:09 pm:

    Eat Hot Fuck!

Nate: penises most surely do rock! I must say while I sure as hell admire the heck out of mine, I like others better. ;-)

M- I don't think the Dead covered it, but I do think Jethro Tull did.

By Pug on Thursday, May 31, 2001 - 03:09 pm:

Now, I was fairly certain Thin Lizzy did that song----but now you're saying the Pogues did it, also? Now I'm really confused....
I was all ready to say I like Metallica's cover but I gave all the credit to Phil Lynott---but I guess I can't do that, now----
Oh, well.....fuckin' rock'n'roll Micks. I love 'em. I drink to 'em.
I drink to damn near anything.

By J on Thursday, May 31, 2001 - 03:37 pm:

    Right on,I'll drink to that.

By M on Thursday, May 31, 2001 - 05:19 pm:

    found this someplace...
    Whiskey In The Jar

Garcia recorded this with David Grisman for their album Shady Grove. The next day, it bubbled out at a Grateful Dead rehearsal, now released on So Many Roads (1965-1995). The Dead subsequently soundchecked it twice in 1993 but never played it at a show... blah blah

what happened to the all caps DICK guy? i was beginning to like him

By Jim aka Pajama on Friday, June 1, 2001 - 12:08 am:

    whooooooooooooooops.

you are most certainly correct, Pug.

Thin Lizzy is what I meant to say. Don't know where in the hell I pulled Jethro Tull from. I don't think I've even ever heard a Tull song.

By Jim aka Pajama on Friday, June 1, 2001 - 12:12 am:

cyst: belatedly... I wholeheartedly recommend buying Madonna's "Music" album. The last track, "Gone," is sumptuous and easily among her most gorgeous songs ever!

the one track I didn't especially care for was the current single, "What it feels like for a girl."

however, now that it's been remixed, I can say this is one of the few times I prefer the remix to the album version and I now like the song.

"Don't Tell Me" is faboo too. :)

By Pug on Friday, June 1, 2001 - 07:11 pm:

Jim----If you're going to listen to a Jethro Tull song, make it "Hymn 43" and report back with your findings.

By dave. on Friday, June 1, 2001 - 09:12 pm:

i like "we used to know". hell, their first two albums were the best. "living in the past" is a pretty good retrospective and can be found at nearly every used vinyl shop.

i went through a "britain - early 70's" kick a few years back. avoiding the obvious stones, who and zep, i found a bunch of early yes, procol harum, jethro tull and king crimson at 2nd time around in seattle.

that's all i have to say about it.

By Pug on Saturday, June 2, 2001 - 02:09 pm:

That Robert Fripp really knew his way around a mellotron.

By dave. on Saturday, June 2, 2001 - 06:00 pm:

they took a crap when they signed on belew, even though they got bruford and he's badass.

greg lake was pretty rad, too. so why did emerson, lake and palmer suck so hard?

By dave. on Saturday, June 2, 2001 - 06:03 pm:

oh, and referring to jim's original post, metallica is now a gay, leather band so it's not too surprising.

By Jim aka Pajama on Tuesday, June 5, 2001 - 05:19 pm:

    LOL dave. :)

By Jim aka Pajama on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 - 03:32 pm:

Very belatedly, I'm going to take Pug's suggestion and seek out Hymn 34. I shall report back soon.
