I know what you mean. But unfortunately, it's not just the media. Remember the McCaughey septuplets born about a year ago? Well a couple months before they were born out in the midwest, a couple from Washington, D.C., who happen to be "black," had sextuplets. One died early on, and five remained, in addition to the two toddlers the couple already had. After about a week of news about these seven babies in the midwest and how they were being showered with love and adoration and houses and vans and diapers and money from everywhere, a neighbor of the local couple contacted the local news bureau's and told their story. Trying to to make a long story short. The big powerhouse realty company, Fannie Mae, flat out GAVE a house to this family. The house is a block from me (and curiously enough right where I was mugged a few months back, but that's a tired old story), and I remember watching it be rennovated but not knowing why. They moved in three weeks ago. The mayor and members of the city council welcomed the family to their new home. The next day an open house was held where they met neighbors. I was very impressed with the whole story and was sharing my thoughts with a neighbor and friend who said, AND I QUOTE, "I give it 6 months before 'those blacks' have that house and the block in shambles. You KNOW it always happens when THEY move in to a neighborhood." This from a very devout and religious Catholic who says she is not prejudiced or biggoted, just realistic and knows from what she speaks. I told her I completely disagreed and was offended by what she said and was told I fealt this way because I was a "bleeding heart Democrat." My retort was that I would rather be a bleeding heart ,non-practicing Catholic Democrat, then a bigotted god-fearing Republican." My mind continues to be boggled by the fact that such ways of thinking stil exist and run rampant. When will we stop being Irish-Americans, African-Americans, Hispanics, and become simply Americans, or rather, people? I look at small children and they are fine I think until they're parents begin the corruption. Ah, fuck. Does anyone have a clue? |
